In 1983 a small group of parents who wanted to be directly involved with their children’s first schooling experience and they organized Saint Anne’s Preschool. The preschool began operation in the basement of Sacred Heart Church under the direction of a certified teacher. Parents functioned as teacher aides in the classroom.
By 1987 a parent handbook was published, and a written curriculum was adapted. There was one MWF and one TTH class. In 1988 the preschool name was changed to Aurora Borealis Cooperative Preschool and in 1990, ABC officially established its federal nonprofit status.
The early ‘90s ABC acquired state certification as a private preschool. We moved to a new location in the yellow Energy Building on the Tanana Valley Fairgrounds.
Two years later in 1993, ABC expanded our program by adding an afternoon MWF class for 4- and 5-year-olds. Our Parent Handbook was revised and updated. A teacher handbook and curriculum handbook was developed and published by our teachers.
Missy started with ABC in 2000 and has been the teacher of all three classes since 2003.
Many bake sales, garage sales, various fundraisers and grants along with countless volunteer hours have kept our school doors open and the school thriving for over 40 years.
Our success comes from family and community support and we are thrilled in the longevity of our preschool. We now have previous ABC preschoolers bringing their children to our program!
