There was lots of excitement in Primary 3 this week when they welcomed a very special visitor — The Critter Keeper!
They had the amazing opportunity to meet a whole host of fascinating creatures, including pythons, tarantulas, bearded dragons, a Senegal parrot, a giant cockroach, a cane toad, an African land snail and a tortoise!
The children were incredibly excited (and very brave!) as they got the chance to see some of the animals up close. They asked lots of fantastic questions and discovered some fascinating facts about where the animals live, what they eat and, most importantly, how they can care for them properly.
The visit linked perfectly with our Our Caring World topic. The children have shown a real interest in learning about animals, their needs and the different ways we can care for animals and our planet. It was wonderful to bring their classroom learning to life by meeting these incredible creatures.
A huge thank you to The Critter Keeper for coming to visit Primary 3 and sharing your amazing animals and knowledge with us.
They absolutely loved it!

P2PM had a very special visitor this week. Ms Schmitz took time out of her busy day to talk to us about the SSPCA rescue centre in Drumoak. Ms Schmitz volunteers for the centre and she came and shared all that the centre does to help animals in need. Primary 2 shared all that they’ve learned so far about the needs and wants of animals and impressed Ms Schmitz with their kindness and compassion.
One of our young learners was so inspired that she wanted to volunteer immediately - no more need for school - she knew her career path thanks to Ms Schmitz!
They used this visit to inspire their report writing and shared their reports with her later in the day.

P1 have been demonstrating Captain Curious and DJ Determined this week when learning about ‘who helps us’ in the hospital. They practiced making emergency calls by dialling 999 and asking for paramedics in an ambulance to take patients to the hospital, where they needed to wait in the emergency waiting room to be seen by a doctor.
In their role play, they took on the roles caring for unwell babies and even practiced putting on bandages and giving medicine to make their patients feel better!
Lots of fun and learning about ‘who helps us in the hospital’, they can’t wait to explore who else helps us in the next few weeks!

P7A have enjoyed engaging with Interland this week, a web-based online game created by Google to teach children the fundamentals of internet safety and digital citizenship. It uses an immersive 3D virtual world where children help characters navigate online challenges, defeat phishers, stop cyberbullies, and avoid hackers. Interland is divided into four floating islands, each focusing on a core safety lesson.
Reality River teaches children how to spot phishing scams, identify fake news, and distinguish real information from online tricks. Mindful Mountain focuses on privacy and responsible information sharing. Kind Kingdom promotes positive digital interactions and Tower of Treasure emphasises online security, teaching the importance of strong passwords and protecting confidential personal data.

Who will we be today in ELC? Doctors, firefighters, teachers or police officers? Our children have loved stepping into the shoes of everyday heroes, bringing their imaginations to life through exciting play and exploration.
Using role-play, playdough, LEGO and puppets, the children explored the important roles of community helpers through creative, hands-on experiences. As they created, built and shared their ideas, they developed confidence, communication and teamwork skills while learning about the people who help keep us safe, healthy and happy.

What’s in the box? A strange and weird thing? Something terrible, or a thing of beauty?
All Ferryhill School pupils enjoyed an entertaining and exciting puppet show where storyteller, Peter Grimm opens the box to find the ‘Thing’ that takes him on an unusual journey that weaves its way through a medley of well known Brother’s Grimm tales, to finally unlock his imagination and free his stories.
The children were treated to an original story told with puppets, acting and live music all thanks to a generous donation from the Ferryhill Fundraising Committee.

We would like to say a huge congratulations and thank you to Mr Skinner. Mr Skinner is leaving Ferryhill as Principal Teacher to join Brimmond School as Depute Head Teacher. His last day at Ferryhill will be Friday 25th September.
Mr Skinner made a really positive impact at Ferryhill by supporting learners and staff. We wouldn't have space to list all of the amazing things he has done for us, but perhaps the most memorable for the children would be arranging the Multicultural Celebration Day and the World Cup Extravaganza.
We would like to thank him for his hard work, expertise and knowledge sharing and his ability to always have a sunny disposition and positive outlook!
We wish him well in his new role - lucky Brimmond!

Primary 3D pupils have been busy becoming authors AND fantastic feedback friends!
Each week, they enjoy their Authors’ Chair, where children have the opportunity to proudly share their narrative writing with the class. They are learning to be careful listeners, think about their Learning Intention and Success Criteria, and give kind, helpful feedback about what their friends have done well.
The young writers are becoming more confident at asking and answering great questions, listening to the ideas of others and thinking about how feedback can help us improve our writing. They are even beginning to challenge ourselves by thinking about what they might do differently next time.
These weekly sessions are a fantastic first step towards developing their peer and self-assessment skills throughout P3, while celebrating each other’s ideas, effort and achievements along the way!

At the beginning of each school year, every class works together to create a Class Charter. This sets out how we will treat one another and helps to create a safe, happy and respectful learning environment where everyone can thrive.
Our Class Charters are based on the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Through class discussions, pupils learn about the rights they are entitled to and explore what these rights look like in everyday school life. Together, they agree on a set of promises and expectations that will help ensure everyone's rights are respected.
Children are recognised as rights holders, meaning they have rights that must be respected and protected. As rights holders, pupils also learn how their actions can help support the rights of others.
Teachers, school staff, parents and carers are known as duty bearers. Duty bearers have a responsibility to help ensure that children's rights are met. By working in partnership, rights holders and duty bearers create a positive community where everyone feels valued, listened to and included.
The process of creating a Class Charter gives pupils a genuine voice in shaping their classroom environment. It encourages teamwork, respect, responsibility and mutual understanding. As a result, children develop a stronger awareness of their rights and the role they play in promoting the rights of others.
Our Class Charters are displayed proudly in classrooms and are regularly referred to throughout the year, helping to ensure that our shared values and commitments remain at the heart of everything we do.

P5M/W have been learning how to store and prepare food safely.
Firstly, they wiped down tables, tied back long hair and washed their hands thoroughly to ensure a clean and hygienic working environment. Next, they checked expiry dates, storage instructions and allergy information on food packaging to help them make safe and informed choices. They then discussed the importance of handling food hygienically and safely, particularly when using sharp utensils, cutting ingredients and heating food.
Finally, they carefully measured out the ingredients and followed the recipe step by step. Using everything they had learned about food safety and hygiene, they successfully created delicious Muesli Fingers that were safe for everyone in the class to enjoy. The children demonstrated excellent teamwork, responsibility and practical skills throughout the activity, and were very proud of their finished products.
