A huge congratulations to our Glee choir for winning the Spirit of Glee award at the Glee competition this week.
We are so proud of the children to be recognised as embodying the spirit of Glee. We see that in school everyday so it is lovely that we could bring that to the stage in front of an audience.
A huge thank you to Mrs Griffiths, Mr Roberts-James and our parent helpers for making this all possible for our children.
Here is a photo of a few of our choir celebrating with the trophy.

Primary 1 pupils had a wonderful time celebrating Lunar New Year this week. They created vibrant Chinese dragons using concertina-folded paper to mimic the flowing, dynamic movement of a dragon’s body. The children were so proud of their creations — and they look absolutely amazing!
WB 23.0.26
P2M have been practicing handwriting this week. We started with a finger warm-up to help strengthen our hand muscles and get ready to write. We’re noticing how these warm-ups make our handwriting neater.
In class, we explored letter sizing and formation, using our brand-new Nelson Handwriting scheme resources. After we finished, we enjoyed giving each other friendly peer feedback on handwriting progress.
WB 23.02.26
Winter Olympic fever hit Primary 1 this week. They had such a fantastic lesson experiencing different sports and activities featured in the Winter Olympics. Take a look at our photo gallery.
WB 23.02.26
Miss Morrison has started a new lunchtime club called Friendly Foxes. The club provides a calm, welcoming space where children can enjoy playing games, build confidence, and develop new friendships. Pupils have already enjoyed activities such as Snakes and Ladders, Connect 4, and building with Kapla.
WB 23.02.26
P4S have been exploring our school topic 'Our Wider World'. They have been investigating different types of housing, their features and exploring these within our local area.
The children then used Kapla to design houses, as you can see from the picture gallery, they used the Kapla to make multi - level homes with stairs and faced the challenges of how to put the roofs on and keep them steady!
Perhaps we could offer their services at the Ferryhill site - they definitely have great design ideas, some architects, designers and builders of the future.
WB 23.02.26
At Ferryhill, we are proud to celebrate World Thinking Day— a global event that brings together millions of young people to reflect, connect, and take action. Each year on 22nd February, Guides, Rainbows, Brownies and Scouts groups around the world unite to explore this year’s international theme, learn about global issues, and celebrate the power of friendship and community.
This special day encourages our young people to think about those who share the Guiding spirit across the world, to appreciate different cultures, and to consider how small actions can make a big difference.
We invited our learners to wear the Guides, Rainbows, Brownies and Scouts uniforms to school to celebrate the occasion.
WB 16.02.26
P4C enjoyed a local area walk around Torry to investigate the different types of buildings in our community and how they are used. As we explored, we talked about the purpose of each building, who might use it, and why it is important to our local area.
We also spent time discussing the difference between natural and man‑made features. Pupils spotted examples such as trees, clouds, and plants for natural features, and buildings, roads, and bridges for man‑made ones. Everyone worked brilliantly as observant explorers!
It was a great opportunity for P4C to develop their understanding of their local environment while practising teamwork and curiosity.
WB 16.02.26
Primary 2, P4/5R and P5G have loved being inspired by the Winter Olympics in PE! We had a blast learning curling with the brilliant indoor sets from Curl Aberdeen, discovering the stones, the house, and tricky take-out shots. We also tried our own cross-country skiing and luge events, showing great teamwork and determination all the way!
WB 16.02.26
P2D had an amazing time welcoming Marty the Robot from Robotical for a two-week holiday! We had so much fun coding Marty to do all sorts of cool things – he even played football with us! We decorated him with fun stickers and used block coding to make him move, dance, sing and follow our commands. We would have loved to keep Marty in our class forever, but sadly he has now gone back home to Robotical in Edinburgh.
WB 16.02.26
This week in nursery, we enjoyed learning about and celebrating Lunar New Year. The children explored some of the traditions, including wearing a touch of red on the day for good luck.
Lisa made us some delicious noodles to have with our lunch, sharing her culture and celebrations with the nursery children.
We read about the Zodiac animals, discovering what animal represents our different birth years.
It was a lovely opportunity to celebrate diversity and learn about the world around us. Kung Hei Fat Choi!
WB 16.02.26
In ELC this week, the nursery children and their families celebrated Pancake Day with a special stay and play event.
We had a fantastic time welcoming our grown-ups into nursery to join in the fun together. We mixed, flipped and tasted delicious pancakes, choosing from a variety of yummy toppings!
There were lots of smiles, laughter and messy hands as everyone got involved. Thank you for coming along and making it such a memorable morning.
WB 16.02.26
Our ELC children had a fabulous visit from Buglife Scotland this week with the exciting opportunity to plant bulbs in the Bon Accord Gardens.
We carefully dug holes in the soil, placed the bulbs in the ground and covered them up, all while getting covered in mud ourselves!
Leanna and Jack taught us all about flowers and insects, and how they work together. The children were delighted to learn that flowers don't just brighten up the garden, but also help attract insects too.
WB 16.02.26
P2M have been busy exploring the brand‑new universal supports now available in every classroom at Ferryhill. As part of our learning, all children had the chance to try out a range of tools from our support toolkit and reflect on how each one could help them in different ways.
We began by experimenting with the coloured reading rulers. Pupils noticed that different colours made reading easier in different ways — and that the colour that worked best varied from person to person. This helped us understand that the tools we use to support our learning don’t have to be the same for everyone.
We also explored a selection of focus tools. Once again, some children found these really helpful, while others preferred different strategies. This led to a great discussion about how universal support works: there is no one-size-fits-all approach, because everyone’s brain works differently.
Trying out these supports helped us recognise that learning is unique to each of us. The tools in our classrooms are there to ensure every child can access their learning in the way that suits them best — and that is what makes us all wonderfully unique.
WB 16.02.26
It's gone! The end of an era, but a huge leap forward for us and our new extension.
The demolition of the annexe will really help the new extension and refurbishment to move forward by allowing more space on the site. Drainage and foundations are well on the way. Lots of fantastic progress internally in the existing building too!
WB 02.02.26
For the first time since 1935, we are able to see the whole of the Ferryhill School Building from Albury Road without the annexe sitting in front of it.
91 years of an obstructed view now visible from our new ELC. The children have enjoyed the new perspective from their nursery garden.
WB 02.02.26
We have had a busy week in nursery, working together to complete our Rubik's Cube! The children explored problem solving through twisting, turning and persevering. We put on our thinking caps and researched how to work together to complete it.
Bill, who delivers our nursery lunches, couldn't believe that we'd completed it, he was surprised to see our achievement!
Big brain power and tiny hands - we love seeing our little learners tackle big challenges with such determination (and a little help from Stacey!).
WB 02.02.26
Our annual Scots Poetry Competition brought a wonderful buzz of excitement to the school as pupils embraced the rich language, rhythm and heritage of Scotland's verse. From heartfelt renditions of Burns to lively renditions of J.K.Annand, our learners performed with confidence, expression and pride. Class heats led to a fantastic final where clear diction, dramatic flair and a true understanding of the poems shone through.
The event not only celebrated Scotland's literary tradition but also encouraged creativity, resilience and self-belief, with every participant deserving applause for having the courage to step forward and share their voice.
A big thank you to the families who have clearly supported our learners to rehearse, add in actions and refine their performances. I'm sure a few of you know our favourite poems off by heart too and have enjoyed learning a few new words along the way!
Awb'dy deserves a muckle weel done! Hae a wee keek at oor photies and enjoy a sicht o braw performances and happy faces fae the day.
WB 02.02.26
A huge well done to Aine from Primary 5 who has certainly been able to show her dancing steps to success! She brought in a huge variety of medals that she has won in dancing competitions recently. She had so many that I'm not sure she would be able to dance with them on as they were so heavy! Well done Aine, a fantastic achievement.
WB 02.02.26
P2M have been learning about Pop Art. Pop Art uses bright colours and dots, giving a comic style look. We used pop art techniques on photos of ourselves and added a Scottish twist. Our Scottish words helped our pictures become just like a Scottish comic book!
“I liked the bright colours”- Jayden
“I liked using pictures of me”- Ellie
“I like learning Scottish words”- Emily
WB 02.02.26
Primary 1 had a fabulous afternoon celebrating all things Scotland! They all had the opportunity to have a taste of haggis, neeps and tatties - with varying degrees of enjoyment! The shortbread, however, went down a treat with everyone!
The children enjoyed some Scottish music and dancing, with some of our learners even dressing up in traditional Scottish tartan.
Enjoy the photographs of our afternoon. A big thank you to the parent helpers who supported the smooth running of the event.

Perhaps inspired by the upcoming celebrations of Robert Burns and all things Scottish, Primary 4C showed their creative flair by recreating Charles Rennie Mackintosh's famous rose design.
I'm sure you will all agree that they have done a fantastic job of recreating his signature Glasgow Style Art Nouveau. The lucky parents of P4C will now enjoy this artwork all year round as a calendar!
WB 19.01.26
Primary 5 and Primary 6 children got to strut their stuff at our Strive Dance sessions in the gym hall this week. Strive is a free weekly dance class run by Citymoves. The groups include multiple performance opportunities that allow the group to develop leadership skills through programming arts events for their local community.
An excellent opportunity for our young learners to get active and dance away the January blues. A much needed movement break during a week of rain and high winds.
WB 19.01.26
The ELC children have enjoyed learning about Robert Burns and Scottish culture. They explored Scottish stories and poems, learning new words.
Everyone looked wonderful in their blue/white clothes and tartan patterns, as we participated in Scottish dancing together.
During lunchtime the children tried Haggis, Neeps and Tatties - with a range of mixed reviews! The Cranachan Cupcakes were the definite favourite.
WB 19.01.26

P2D and P4S were proud to hand over the generous donation of food items collected from the whole school as part of their Foodbank Reverse Advent Calendar. The initiative was a child led idea that grew from the two classes working together as class buddies and linking their learning to their topic work. Throughout November and December the children showed fantastic teamwork, kindness and responsibility as they organised and collected donations. Local company CFine was delighted with the children's efforts and praised the importance of their contribution in helping to ensure local families are supported over the festive period and beyond.

A very busy week for all of the infant classes as we showcased our talents and put on a very special Christmas show for all of our parents to enjoy.
Primary 3 children performed 'Knock! Knock! The Nativity' and the Primary 2 and Primary 1 sang songs throughout the show.
We are very lucky to have been able to use the church hall next door to hold our performance. The children enjoyed using the tall stage with stage lights and microphones.
Thank you for all of your lovely feedback which we have shared with staff.
A huge thank you and well done to our performers and to our teachers and PSAs who put in so much work to make the shows so fabulous!

The nursery children gathered in the festive wonderland to help Santa with a special mission. Kimberley from Mission Enchanted guided us through our mission with a soft jingle floating through the air.
Excited gasps filled the room as the children received a phone call from Santa, and embarked on their mission, dressed as helpful elves. The elves eagerly built Santa’s sleigh, sorted presents, fed Rudolph juicy carrots and had a snowball fight with Frosty the Snowman. Santa needed brave helpers, and our youngest learners definitely delivered!
The children whispered their own Christmas wishes into special envelopes before posting them into Santa’s post box. As they returned to nursery, the children cheered knowing they had completed their mission with teamwork, kindness and festive sparkle.
WB 08.12.25

An exciting build update for you! Some fantastic visual progress both inside and outside of the building.
As you can see from the photo gallery, some of our Primary 7 children were able to visit the site, go inside the building and help give us an update. In the first photograph, you can see that the void has been filled in and we no longer have a well in the middle of the school! This will give us a much bigger learning space on the top floor.
You may have also noticed that the workmen have taken down all of the slates from the roof of the annexe. This preparation work will allow for the (very careful) demolition of the annexe to begin after the Christmas holidays. As the granite will be taken down carefully and repurposed throughout the new build, as part of the Granite Retention policy, it will be a steady process, no wrecking balls or quick demolition like the tunnel!
We are all very excited to see the progress both inside and outside of the building.
WB 24.11.25

Our PSA, Mrs Rath, spent some time with Primary 1 this week teaching them all about Diwali. She taught them that Diwali is called The Festival of Lights because people light small lamps called diyas to make their homes bright. Families clean their houses, wear colourful clothes, and make pretty patterns called rangoli on the floor. They enjoy yummy sweets, give gifts, and watch fireworks. People also pray for good luck and happiness.
It was lovely for Mrs Rath to share an important part of her culture with our learners.

This week we enjoyed a really fun 'Booknic' arranged by the Primary 7 classes.
The whole school was invited to take their favourite book to school along with a cushion or cuddly toy to cuddle up with. All children spent Friday afternoon together, snuggled up in the gym hall reading and sharing their favourite books.
Storm Amy even helped to make the gym hall feel cosier! The dark skies helped to create that wintery feeling we all love as we curl up with a book.
We love opportunities to share a love of reading and to do it together with our friends.

Over the last couple of weeks, the nursery children had their first experiences in the MUGA, and what a fun time they had! From energetic running to lively games and ball play, the children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the space and trying our new activities.
This space is a great addition to our new Ferryhill School, and we are looking forward to the experiences we will embark upon with such a fabulous space for outdoor learning!

It's not only the children from Ferryhill that get to have fun learning about inclusion, neurodivergence and learning differences. Miss Hay, our School Administrator, was invited to the premiere of 'I Swear' a film based on the true story of Tourette Syndrome campaigner John Davidson, charting his journey from diagnosis in 1980s Britain to becoming a prominent advocate for the condition.
The film explores the themes of friendship, overcoming adversity, community and the power of understanding, things we often explore and always encourage at Ferryhill.
Miss Hay felt privileged to be invited along to the exciting event. Miss Hay was invited because she has spent lots of time raising the profile of Tourette Syndrome around the North East of Scotland.

Today Primary 2 set off on their very first local walk around Walker Road to explore our new local community—and what a brilliant autumn adventure it was! As part of our topic Our Local World, we kept our eyes peeled for all the different houses and buildings in Torry. We spotted all sorts of styles, discovered two churches, and even came across a campervan parked nearby! The children walked together so responsibly and safely, making it a wonderful first outing for P2D.
WB 22.09.25
Primary 7 have been learning all about chemical reactions this week. They explored what would happen if they mixed vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. They took time to write up their experiments, a really important skill to develop as they move through primary school and into secondary school.
WB 22.09.25
P6MW had a fantastic time in the fresh air this week. They were making use of our wonderful outdoor learning resources and took part in a den building lesson with Mrs Wattie.
The groups had to collaborate, communicate, plan, design and of course build! They also had to test their problem solving skills when things didn't quite work out. Some amazing creations from our P6 learners.
WB 22.09.25
Primary 5 classes have been exploring the world of science with Mr MacDonald this week. They all enjoyed taking part in an experiment which demonstrated filtration. As you can see from the pictures, they worked in groups to filter a mixture in a variety of ways.
WB 22.09.25
P4C and P2R have buddied up this term. They spent a lovely session together with our new Chromebooks to work through some maths problems and fun online games.
We always love to see cross stage collaboration at Ferryhill, the children develop so many skills and enjoy their time together.
WB 22.09.25
P2D arrived at school to find that their classroom had turned into a crime scene! When the children arrived this morning, flashing police sirens and a big screen announcement told us some shocking news… our class teddy, Mr Snuggles, had vanished! The young detectives quickly got to work, following muddy footprints, inspecting a dropped scarf, and puzzling over a mysterious note. With their super sleuthing skills (and some fantastic report writing too!), the case was cracked. We’re delighted to say Mr Snuggles is safely back where he belongs—snuggled up in P2D!
WB 22.09.25
P2M and P2R turned into detectives this week to solve the case of the missing puppy. They arrived to school to find that their classroom had become a crime scene! The children used all of their findings to write a report. Their report helped them to solve the case of the missing puppy!
WB 22.09.25
Primary 2 have been very busy this week learning about people who help us. They took part in a fun scavenger hunt in the playground to learn about all of the people in the community who can help them in different ways. Another opportunity to enjoy the sun while it lasts!

We have a new school email address. If you need to contact the school please use ferryhill.enquiries@ab-ed.org or call 01224 879720
Primary 2 pupils from P2D, P2M and P2R have been learning how to use a story mountain to help plan out their writing. Pupils have used the story mountain to write a story about the Ferryhill Fox. When they had finished their stories, they read them out to the Ferryhill Fox to check their work and to practise reading aloud. They are very proud of their work and wanted to share them with you on our website.
Lewis P2M - "We used the story mountain to help us plan the story about the Ferryhill Fox."
Jack P2M - "We planned a beginning, middle and end of the story and were able to include a problem."
Jidenna P2M - "The plan helps us to write our story."

Ferryhill children were treated to a free concert this week! Yurii in Primary 6 entertained the crowds armed only with his trusty guitar. Yurii started playing his guitar in the playground after being dropped off by he bus, the crowd gathered and joined in by singing along. What a fantastic way to start the day.

Some of the little explorers from nursery had a visit to Albury Park earlier this week. It was a trip full of laughter, excitement, and discovery!
From climbing the play structures to zooming down the slide, every child had fun exploring part of our local community.
The children were learning about how to stay safe when walking to and from the park, showing an awareness of keeping themselves and others safe, with guidance from our special helper SIMOA the Elephant.

P4S have been exploring place value in a variety of ways this week. Typically place value is a very important part of numeracy lesson to help pupils understand the value of numbers. As you can see, some of our learners were using Dienes materials (the cube represent 1000, the 'square' blocks represent 100, the long thin 'stick' represents 10 and the individual small cubes represents ones or units) to physically show the numbers given.
Unusually, the place value lesson then transformed into an art lesson. The class used Dienes materials to recreate Mondrian's modern abstract style.

A lovely moment to share with you this week from our morning bus journey. Maya was reading a book to Lydia in Swedish! Such a lovely moment with two of our young learners.

Mrs Cameron had a special visit from Kamsi this week, a visit that Mrs Cameron simply had to share on the school website.
Kamsi proudly showed off her incredible work and Mrs Cameron is proud to share it with you all.
Kamsi said "I was really inspired by the values poster and I wanted to make my own poster. The values help us to be the best we can be!"
Thank you for sharing your beautiful poster, Kamsi💙

We are excited to share photographs of the moment so many of us have been waiting patiently for........ demolition day!
The annexe has been stripped out and the legendary tunnel is no more. As sad as it is to say goodbye to a large part of Ferryhill history (The annexe 'the new bit' was built in 1935), we know that it means the school refurbishment and extension can really begin.
We will try to keep you updated on the progress of Ferryhill School, and luckily we have lots of help from our nursery children who love popping up the road to take photographs and videos to help document the whole process for us.
The photo gallery shows the first step of the annexe windows being removed to help the builders strip out the annexe in preparation for the granite to be taken down (and later repurposed in our new setting), to the tunnel being taken apart piece by piece. We are also delighted to share pictures that the builders have taken for us from inside the annexe.... an unrecognisable annexe!

We are so proud of our new Primary 1 pupils! They have settled into Ferryhill so well, following our new (and more complicated than usual) routines. Their transition process at the end of the 24/25 session was not held in the Ferryhill @ Walker Road environment, and the children have had to cope with more change than is typical for a Primary 1 pupil at Ferryhill School.
Please have a look at our photo gallery which shows our new P1 pupils enjoying their time with their new friends, with their new teachers in their new classrooms.

Primary 4 and Primary 2 have buddied up! They are working together as a team and have already learned a lot from one another.
In their first session together, they discovered what it means to be a good buddy. They asked what a good buddy looks like and sounds like.
We look forward to seeing more pictures of their learning adventure together.

The children of P7A recorded all of the reading they engaged in over a 24-hour period and then created their own ‘reading river’ demonstrating all the texts they read in their daily lives, including books, signs, magazines and online content, to show the flow of their reading journey.
WB 01.09.25
Primary 4C and P4s from P4/5R are off to a swimming start this year! Every Monday pupils enjoy boarding a bus (which we are all now rather professional at) and heading off to Cults Swimming Pool to take part in swimming lessons for the next 10 weeks. This is definitely one of the many highlights of Primary 4 for the children, just look at those smiles!
WB 01.09.25
Primary 2D have enjoyed exploring our new environment this week. They have had an outdoor learning session in our new playground and explored our new library.
As you can see from our photo gallery, the children have settled in well and our learning journey for the 25/26 session is well underway!
WB 01.09.25
Our Ferryhill School and ELC values were reviewed and redesigned in the 24/25 session. These have been shared with all pupils and are used continually throughout the school day. They are on display throughout our school and ELC environments.
We use the values to promote our expectations for learning and relationships in our community. We have daily conversations and interactions surrounding our values, they are a very important part of our school. We have different values in our ELC as these were led by our ELC team, pupils and parents.
Although these have already been shared with parents last session, we felt it important to share these with our school community again so that you can also use them in your conversations with the children.
At Ferryhill we have a Positive Mind, are Ambitious and Kind!
WB 25.08.25
We would like to remind parents that Ferryhill is a nut free school. Please do not send your child to school with any nuts in their snack or packed lunch as we have several children with severe nut allergies. Thank you for your support.

Ferryhill is a Rights Respecting School and we are proud to hold a gold award.
One important aspect that we take time to consider and create at the beginning of the year is our class charters.
Class charters help us to create our class ethos as a rights respecting school.
Each class discusses the importance of Rights Holders (Children) and Duty Bearers (Adults in school) and what each group need to do to ensure that all Rights Holders have their rights upheld and their needs met. We also discuss what Rights Holders need to do to ensure that all Rights Holders have their rights upheld.
WB 25.08.25
Please see the diagram provided to us by the bus company to advise of the anticipated route of travel via bus to Walker Road and back to Ferryhill during the upcoming bridge closure. We have been advised that the closure will take place from 15.09.25.
Effectively the bus from Albury will use Victoria Bridge via Guild Street (bus gates)

Mrs Cameron found the Ferryhill Fox in the nursery on Tuesday! But don't worry, it was just in the form of this marvellous creation from Henley, Rosie and William. The children have loved exploring the new box of Kapla. Yesterday they made an octopus and today they made the Ferryhill Fox! They worked as a team, followed the picture in the Kapla instruction book and were very proud to show off their masterpiece.

What a fabulous week we have had in our new ELC building! It has been full of fun, adventure and exploring as we adapt to our new learning environment.
We welcomed back all the children from nursery last year for an open afternoon on Tuesday, and all our returners were back in full time on Wednesday. Over the week we have also had visits from our newcomers who are just as excited as we are about our new ELC.
We are looking forward to all the new learning experiences we will embark upon in our new spaces!

We were delighted to see that the Ferryhill Fox joined us at Albury this week. I think that he must have been impressed at how well the children were able to follow their new routines.
I wonder if he will venture across the river and visit us at Ferryhill @Walker Road.
WB 18.08.25
We are in! We have had a fantastic first day at Ferryhill@Walker Road. Everyone has settled in well and has enjoyed touring our new building. We have included a few photographs of the children in their new classes as a sneak peak before parents have the opportunity to visit us in our new home on Friday. We look forward to opening our doors and welcoming you all in.
