Sixth grade is a time for students to begin to assert their independence. As parents, we often struggle with how much independence is enough?
Here are some tips and tricks to foster independence and executive functioning skills:
1: Look at Schoology together and Check Power School Frequently - Weekly check-ins are great!
Set a weekly time to have a check-in where the student gives the parent a tour of work they are proud of and a check of Schoology grade books in each class to make sure student is on track with learning activities!
Ask your student to show you how they log in and check assignments
2: Make sure your student's Study Spot is free from distractions!
Place cell phones and other technology in another spot until studying is over
Choose somewhere that the TV isn't in competition for your student's attention
Designate a time for homework to happen (is it right after school, or after dinner?)
3: Use the student planner every night!
Support the student to check the planner for work that needs to be completed.
Review with your student what they recorded in their planner for class and for homework
Support the student to write in after school activities to make sure the student can see their responsibilities for each day.
4: Use Schoology!
All work is visible, so the student can show the parent all of what they are working on.
Many assignments are also linked so that you may print an extra copy
5: Connect!
Discuss learning at home! Students will bring home a weekly report, and teachers will send an update.
