The ALPs Accelerated Mathematics pathway in Elementary allows students to complete the sequence of mathematics courses at a faster rate. The program is designed for GT/Advanced students whose academic needs cannot be met in the regular ALPs Curriculum. Students enrolled in the Accelerated Mathematics Pathway should:
demonstrate a strong understanding of mathematical concepts, solving related problems accurately
demonstrate knowledge and understanding of above grade level math concepts, possibly without having been exposed to them
easily learn new math concepts and process them at a faster rate than other Gifted or Advanced students
demonstrate the ability to consistently work independently
enjoy math and solving challenging math problems.
Placement in this opportunity is determined at the Central Office level, and the opportunity is by invitation only. Students are invited to participate based on a review of required assessment scores. If students do not qualify for the Accelerated Mathematics Pathway in Grade 3, they may enter the pathway in Grades 4-7 based on a review of assessment scores.
The Maryland State Department of Education recently passed the PreK-12 Mathematics Policy which will shift the high school course sequence in Maryland. Students on the Accelerated Math Pathway will begin taking courses for high school credit in their 7th grade year. For additional information on this Mathematics Policy, please click here.
All courses for high school credit are required for graduation and can not be skipped. The course progression for students participating in the Accelerated Mathematics Pathway is as follows:
Course Overview: This accelerated course is designed to meet the needs of the gifted or advanced learner whose academic needs cannot be met in the regular ALPs Curriculum. The curriculum explores advanced topics, encouraging students to think critically, apply mathematical reasoning, and develop a strong foundation for future mathematical learning. The course will cover Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards at the 3rd and 4th grade level within the following domains:
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Number and Operations in Base Ten
Numbers and Operations - Fractions
Measurement and Data
Geometry
This course will use Reveal Mathematics materials along with ALPs curriculum materials. If students are successful in this course, they will take Math 4/5 in Grade 4.
Prerequisites: Qualifying scores on required assessments AND an invitation from the Advanced Learner Programs Office.
Course Format: This course will be a virtual learning offering with a certified teacher.

This course will use Reveal Mathematics materials along with ALPs curriculum materials. If students are successful in this course, they will take Math 6/7 in Grade 5.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Math 3/4 or qualifying scores on required assessments AND an invitation from the Advanced Learner Programs Office.
Course Format: This course will be a virtual learning offering with a certified teacher.
Course Overview: Math 6/7 is a course designed to move at an accelerated rate to include both 6th and 7th grade standards within the same domains. Students will explore and develop an understanding of the following mathematical concepts and their application:
computational fluency with decimals and fractions
integer operations
ratios and proportional reasoning (including percent application)
algebraic expressions and equations
area, surface area, and volume
statistical questions, measures and displays
Students will build a deeper understanding of standards within the Expressions and Equations domain needed for Algebra I.
This is the same course offered at the Middle School level to 6th Grade Gifted or Advanced Math students; however, students who are participating in the Accelerated Mathematics pathway will take the course in Grade 5.
This course will use the county approved text for Math 6/7 along with ALPs curriculum materials. If students are successful in this course, they will take Math 7/8 in Grade 6.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Math 4/5 or qualifying scores on required assessments AND an invitation from the Advanced Learner Programs Office.
Course Format: This course will be a virtual learning offering with a certified teacher.
Beginning in SY 26-27, students who have successfully completed Math 4/5 will be automatically registered in Math 6/7 in Grade 5 without further assessment. Any additional students who qualify for the Accelerated Mathematics Pathway in Grade 5 will be tested for content acceleration. To be recommended for content acceleration, students must demonstrate that they are performing at leaset one grade level above their current placement on multiple required assessments. If they qualify for Math 6/7, these students will skip Grade 5 mathematics and therefore must have a strong understanding of Grade 4 and 5 mathematical standards.
After the first quarter, students may no longer join the 5th grade Math 6/7 class.
Course Overview: Math 7/8 is the completion of the sequence for students to enter Algebra I in an accelerated pathway. Mathematics 7/8 is a course designed to move at an accelerated rate to include both 7th and 8th grade standards within the same domains. Students will explore and develop an understanding of the following mathematical concepts and their application of:
two-step and multi-step equations and inequalities
ratios and proportional reasoning (extending to slope)
proportional and non-proportional relationships
probability, sampling and populations; rational and irrational numbers
radicals and exponents
and the Pythagorean Theorem
Students will refine their understanding of standards within the Expressions and Equations domain needed for Algebra 1.
This is the same course offered to 7th Grade Gifted or Advanced Math students; however, students who are participating in the Accelerated Mathematics pathway will take the course in Grade 6.
This course will use the county approved text for Math 7/8 along with ALPs curriculum materials. If students are successful in this course, they will take Algebra I in Grade 7.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Math 6/7.
Course Format: This course will be an in-person offering at the student's school of enrollment.
