When students transfer to Anne Arundel County Public Schools with a prior GT identification, a formal evaluation of the identification is completed by the Office of Advanced Learner Programs.
Note: If you child was previously identified in AACPS as GT or Advanced, you do not need to go through this process. That designation will automatically be reinstated upon reenrollment in AACPS. However, it is highly recommended that you alert the school that your child was previously identified in AACPS.
Enroll your child in your neighborhood AACPS Elementary School.
The GT Reciprocity review process cannot take place until the student is formally enrolled as a student in AACPS.
The Advanced Learner Programs Office reviews the request and all data submitted.
The Advanced Learner Programs Office communicates the decision to the parent/guardian and school principal.
When submitting the Transfer Student Seeking Gifted Services form, the following documents MUST be provided:
• A document from the previous school or district confirming the student’s “GT” identification.
• Copies of test scores or other data that were used in the identification process
• Academic transcripts with current/completed coursework
Data must be submitted as a part of the review process. This review cannot take place until the student is formally enrolled in AACPS. The data must consist of multiple data sources to include measures of potential, ability, and achievement in order for a GT or Advanced Identification to be considered. GT Identification letters indicating placement in GT coursework will not be accepted without the corresponding data.
If the data submitted from the prior school/district is aligned with AACPS and MSDE requirements, the student’s GT or Advanced identification may be granted. If identified as GT or Advanced, the student will participate in Advanced Learner Programs (ALPs). If not identified as GT or Advanced, the student will be placed in core curriculum.
If the parent/guardian is dissatisfied with the decision, they may appeal in writing within (10) ten business days to the Coordinator of Advanced Learning. The written appeal must be received in the office within the required timeframe.

AACPS does not screen transfer students for possible Gifted or Advanced identification. Students can only be tested in Grades 2, 5, and 7 during the formal universal screening process. If transfer students without a prior GT identification want to be considered for the ALPs program, a formal review of the student's academic record can be completed by the Office of Advanced Learner Programs upon request.
