On occasion, there may be students who are not identified as GT or Advanced but are capable of participating in ALPs instruction. When that occurs, students can be referred for an ALPs Conditional Placement. A request for ALPs Conditional Placement may originate with the school or the ALPs Office.
The school or ALPs Office initiates a request for an ALPs Conditional Placement. The request is then reviewed by the school and ALPs Office.
If an ALPs Conditional Placement is warranted, the student will be placed in ALPs instruction for a total of 9-18 weeks. During this time, the school collects data on the student's progress when engaged in ALPs curriculum.
At the end of the ALPs Conditional Placement, a recommendation is made to either continue or discontinue ALPs Instruction.
If the decision is made to continue ALPs Instruction, the student is identified as School Referred - Advanced in Math or School Referred - Advanced in Reading.
If a decision is made to discontinue the ALPs Placement, the student's designation does not change and the student will no longer participate in ALPs Instruction.
If the parent/guardian is dissatisfied with the decision, they may appeal in writing within (10) ten business days to the Coordinator of Advanced Learning. The written appeal must be received in the office within the required timeframe.

If my child successfully completes an ALPs Conditional Placement, can they be identified as GT?
No. Any student who successfully completes an ALPs Conditional Placement will be identified as School Referred - Advanced in Math or School Referred -Advanced in Reading. This designation is equivalent to an Advanced designation and entitles the student to ALPs instruction until they separate from AACPS. Students can only be identified as GT through the formal GT Identification Screening process or through a GT Reciprocity request.
What kind of data will the teacher be collecting during the ALPs Conditional Placement?
Schools collect a variety of data during a student's Conditional Placement period. The data collected may differ between teachers, but some typical data collected can include:

F and P Assessment Data
Student Work Samples from ALPs Lessons
Writing Samples
If my child is not successful in an ALPs Conditional Placement, can they participate again in the future?
If at any point a student is demonstrating readiness to attempt another ALPs Conditional Placement, they may be referred; however, there must be enough data to support another Conditional Placement.
Will I be notified of my child's progress throughout the ALPs Conditional Placement?
Families may reach out to their child's teacher to receive an update on the student's progress during the Conditional Placement period. Some updates or work samples may also be available on the Brightspace platform.
What is the Advanced Learner Programs Office looking for in order to determine if an ALPs Conditional Placement was successful?
The ALPs Office is looking to see if the student consistently demonstrates capabilities consistent with the expectations of the advanced curriuclum and those of other students identified as Advanced in that subject area.
Who should I contact if I think my child should be referred for an ALPs Conditional Placement?
If the parent(s)/guardian(s) feels their child should be considered for an ALPs Conditional Placement, they should reach out to the child's classroom teacher.
