Counting Homework

******This is not official homework but definitely something you can work on if you want something a little more for your child to work on.******


During our first grade year, we will look closely at the patterns of counting and discover that counting is just a pattern that is repeated over and over again with minor variations! We’ll look at, and practice, that 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 pattern everyday! The state content standard for first grade math by the end of the year is to count forward to 100+, orally and in writing. However, our goal is to extend beyond that whenever possible. My goal for our class is to count forward to 500+, orally and in writing.

Practice makes perfect! We start our reviewing counts to 30-- the goal of the Kindergarten program. In first grade we count by ones, twos, fives, tens, and twenty-fives. We go slowly and provide a great deal of practice while building understanding.

The importance of practice at home cannot be over-emphasized. Listening to your child count...counting together at home, on walks, in the car…counting “things” together is wonderful one-on-one practice. Each week, in our homework packet, we will suggest a range of counting for you to emphasize and practice. You certainly don’t have to limit yourself to the suggested range. Work beyond or review lower numbers if that seem best for your child.

All research indicates that children who are ready to become better readers. It also shows that children who are “mathed with” become better at math. Your help with short, pleasant counting practices will make a difference for your first grader!

Please note, counting homework should not take up the majority of your child’s homework time. Please spend about 5 minutes (10 minutes at most) a day on this. You do not need to check off each of the items assigned. The directions are suggestions for how to work on counting. If you have found a better way to practice, by all means use it! Again, please do not spend more than 5-10 minutes a day on counting homework. Thank you!!!

Below you will find the weeks' counting homework assignments. Each newsletter that I send out and each week's packet will include the week of homework that you should be focusing on for counting. Some of the homework includes writing, and some does not. Please make note of what is assigned on each week's counting homework and make sure to complete all that is assigned. The homework is considered incomplete if the counting homework is not done (must be signed and checked off to be considered "done").
