Weekly Focus: Unit 3, Week 2

Language Arts

This week in Language Arts we will continue Unit 3: Plants and Animals Grow and Change. In the unit this week we will be listening to stories and learning how to retell key details and events. Students will be learning how to use the text feature: flow chart to describe sequence of events. We will be learning how to build vocabulary by making connections between words and their uses. We will be learning how to use text features to locate information and how to find text evidence to analyze the author’s purpose. Students will be learning how to compare and contrast two life cycles.

In phonics students will be learning the s-blends (sk, sl, sm, sn, sp, st, sw and contractions with ‘s). With fluency we will be working on accuracy and more specifically rereading when we are reading. In writing students will be working on writing key details and an opinion as a whole class. We will also be learning how to plan and draft a response to the essential question. Independently students will be working on writing a narrative. In language, we will be learning about indefinite pronouns.

The high frequency/sight words we will be focusing on in the curriculum this week are: out, was, then and there. The spelling words we will be practicing in our curriculum this week are: smell, skin, spin, skip, spot, sled, step, slip, out and was.

Math

In math this week students will continue Module 3. We will be learning to represent the Associative property of addition for sums within 20 by describing how to add 3 numbers. Students will learn to explain how to use strategies to decide which two addends to add first when adding 3 numbers. We will be learning how to give an example of a word problem that you would need to add three numbers to solve. Students will be learning to explain the meaning of the symbol is equal to (=). We will learn to explain how to determine whether an equation is true.

Book Exchange

In celebration of the Holiday season, our class will be having a gift exchange of books. Please purchase a new ($5 maximum), non-gender specific book to wrap and send with your child for their gift exchange. Please send your wrapped book without a name (you can put who it’s from, just write that it’s to a friend) to school with your child by Monday, December 19th. We will be exchanging the books on Thursday, December 22nd. I need the books here by Monday to ensure that there are enough for every child to receive a book. Thank you for your great participation in helping to make this season a fun time for gift giving and receiving.

Holidays and Secret Santa

We will be learning about different customs around the world this week. We will learn that “Santa” comes from Holland, “stockings” come from England, and the “poinsettia” comes from Mexico. With each history lesson on the customs we will also be doing some sort of holiday craft, which includes making our own stockings. Students will have an opportunity to be “Secret Santas” where they can bring in a little something for ALL of their classmates to put in their stockings (the stockings are made of paper so nothing too big, bulky, or heavy please). If your child brings something in, please remind them to tell me first thing in the morning so we can secretly put their gifts in the stockings during recess or lunch. They will be so excited to be Secret Santa!

Wishlist

Thank you all for your generosity so far, it is so appreciated. Here's the list of the remaining wish list items. If you can help in any way it would be greatly appreciated, but absolutely not necessary! I’ve included links so it’s easier to find what I’m asking for. Thank you!!!
