Prerequisite: Freshmen must have a “B” average in 8^th grade English. There is no prerequisite for other grade levels.

Course Description: Spanish I introduces the four basic skills of listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Emphasis is placed on pronunciation, vocabulary acquisition, and basic grammatical concepts so that students can function in simple communicative situations. Cultural concepts are presented as an integral part of the learning process so that students are sensitized to a culture other than their own.

1. Speak Spanish in a manner comprehensible to native speakers

2. Retell stories in the classroom

3. Understand limited spoken Spanish

4. Read short stories and a beginner novel in Spanish

5. Write stories and short controlled paragraphs

6. Demonstrate an awareness of cultural similarities and differences
