Current occupation: Assistant Professor, School of Nursing, University of Wisconsin-MadisonAwarded the Certificate in Fall 2012Research Interests: Nursing care of hospitalized older adults, new walking dependence in hospitalized older adults, functional decline in hospitalized older adultsQ&A What was your research project for the Certificate? How Long-Term Care Nurses Transition Residents Admitted from Hospital Settings What role(s) did your community partner(s) play in the project (if relevant)?
Our partner assisted with disseminating information about the study to nurses employed in their setting and providing a private office space where we could conduct the focus groups in.
How might this research affect the health consumer (if relevant)?
The transitional care period between hospital to skilled nursing facility (SNF) is often a high risk time for errors to occur in the transitioning process, impacting patient outcomes and readmission rates to hospitals. Family members, older adults, and hospital healthcare providers need to have a better understanding of what nurses in skilled nursing facilities experience during the transitional care process that impact the quality of care they provide to older adults and what strategies they can use to improve the transitioning of care from hospital to SNF.
What did you learn in the program that you didn’t expect to learn?
I developed a greater appreciation of the importance of engaging stakeholders early and often during the planning phase of the study design and also when conducting the study and providing a summary of findings once the study was complete.
Name the top things learned that you will use in your research career.
1) Is the research question important to the participants and community 2) Strategies to use to engage stakeholders in the research process
How has the certificate advanced your professional goals?
My program of research is evolving into dissemination and implementation science. Completing the certificate helped me to see the path I should pursue and jump started my conceptualization of my program of research.
What other opportunities have you been provided as a result of the certificate program?
I have taken several courses offered by ICTR on dissemination and implementation science. Without completing the certificate I may not have been aware that these opportunities would help advance my program of research
What advice would you give current and future Certificate students?
Enroll in the certificate program early in your academic trajectory!
