Nursing 701
I liked the Nursing 701 class for a number of reasons: 1) it was exclusively on-line and very well-presented, 2) the instructor was extremely involved in the course and did a great job of garnering participation, and 3) it served as an excellent overview of qualitative methods. When I first came in to the course, I couldn’t really think how I would apply qualitative methods to my research ideas, but Dr. Earlise Ward was helpful in showing me how to look at my research questions from different angles, and then it became very clear how these methods would “fit”. We did some group work in the course, which I initially was dreading, but it all worked out in the end. I really enjoyed it. To date, however, I have not employed any of these methods formally, but I have saved all the materials for future needs!
I think that the information provided in this course is useful to future work I will do in T2TR. Nursing 701, at the time taught by Elizabeth Rice is a foundational course that provided an overview of different qualitative research methodologies in addition to criteria for writing, proposing, and evaluating qualitative research.
I think the qualitative methods course is crucial in performing high quality type 2 translational research. Mixed methods research is necessary to make up for some of the inadequacies of pure quantitative research. Qualitative research really brings science back to the stakeholders. This methods class was a great introduction!
Nursing 803–804
An even more useful course, however, would be the Nursing 803-Nursing 804 sequence that I completed last year with Drs. Eileen Porter and Sandy Ward. This is a 2 semester course that covers advanced qualitative and advance quantitative research methodology. The primary product at the end of the course is a complete NIH R21 grant application for both a qualitative and quantitative study. The course also discusses mixing of different methodologies.

Of particular utility were assignments surrounding proposal writing.
I learned about the value of qualitative research and how to think about what particular methods I might use such as grounded theory or phenomenology.
Nursing 701
To date, I have not employed any of these methods formally, but I have saved all the materials for future needs! I could see conducting semi-structured interviews and focus groups to identify barriers to implementation of proposed interventions.
I have used my knowledge of qualitative research methodology and its many potential applications to build mixed methods approaches into my current proposed research.
The information from the course will be very useful for informing how I approach survey design and administration as well as conduct focus group interviews.

YES. I liked the Nursing 701 class for a number of reasons: 1) it was exclusively on-line and very well-presented, 2) the instructor was extremely involved in the course and did a great job of garnering participation, and 3) it served as an excellent overview of qualitative methods.
Yes, however, I also feel that an additional course in advanced qualitative methodology is necessary & useful. This course was introductory in nature.
Definitely! It was fantastic and Dr. Rice was an outstanding teacher.
