1. Meet with your certificate adviser*
Start early. You must have your certificate adviser work with you on your project.* Be sure to meet with your certificate adviser early in your program to discuss your project ideas, opportunities and goals.
Sign up for credit. When you’re ready to work on your project, obtain your certificate adviser's consent and department/program online authorization to register (for independent study) for project credit (two credit hours).
Keep your program adviser informed.* If you are a graduate student and will be integrating certificate project requirements with your degree requirements, you may also want to include your adviser for your degree program in discussions about your project.
* Certificate advisers typically serve as the student's project adviser but students can choose a different faculty member to serve as their project adviser. Either way, certificate adviser responsibilities in the student's project include the following.
Meet with the student to discuss her/his project ideas.
Review, provide feedback and sign off on the student's project proposal.
When the student is ready to work on her/his project, arrange for department/program online authorization to register the student (for independent study) for project credit (two credit hours).
When the student has completed her/his project, review and sign off on the project review form. (Forms)
2. Write your plan for completing your project requirement.
The following information must be included in your plan. (See "project plan approval template" on "Forms" page.)
Name and signature of your project adviser, if different than your certificate adviser
Topic or title of your project
Project objective(s)
Your research partner(s)
Community/end users of your research
Timeline of when you expect to be done with your project

6. Give a presentation about your project
At an AQORN seminar and/or an annual spring get together of certificate students and faculty. NOTE: If you have enrolled in the AQORN seminar for credit, you must present at an AQORN session whether or not you present at the annual certificate meeting.
7. Ask your adviser to review your project and fill out the Project Review Form.
Come to an agreement with your project adviser on what he/she would like to see once you’ve completed your project in order to review your project with the project review form (on the "Forms" page), e.g., presentation, written summary, etc.
