Civil Service special act

Article 30 was approved at Town Meeting. This article authorized the Select Board to petition the General Court for a Special Act to provide that Police Officers are not subject to Civil Service. Counsel has provided the Act below - has been reviewed as well by department leadership.

Motion of Board: Move to petition the General Court for a Special Act exempting all positions in the Police Department from the Civil Service Law as approved at Town Meeting.

AN ACT EXEMPTING ALL POSITIONS IN THE POLICE DEPARTMENT OF THE TOWN OF WILLIAMSTOWN FROM THE CIVIL SERVICE LAW.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same as follows:

SECTION 1. Notwithstanding any general or special law to the contrary, the members of the police department of the town of Williamstown shall be exempt from chapter 31 of the General Laws.

SECTION 2. Section 1 shall not impair the civil service status of any member of the police department of the town of Williamstown employed by the town on the effective date of this act.

SECTION 3. This act shall take effect upon its passage.
