On July 19th, Wendy Champney of North Adams, author of the book “The Forgotten Ledge” will be at the Harper Center to talk about the siege of Fort Massachusetts. The story centers around war between the English, French and their Indian allies in the 1740’s and a small fort, whose site is in the parking lot of the former Price Chopper in North Adams. It was part of a chain of defenses establish by the British to protect settlers in the Berkshire woods. Built to watch the adjacent forts at the Hoosac River it was unfortunately sited at the base of a nearby cliff from where the marauding enemy was able to fire upon and force the fort to ultimately surrender. The fort itself was burned and the captives marched off to Canada. Other iterations of this bastion were rebuilt upon the same location (one of which was commanded by Ephraim Williams) and suffered the same fate. Champney will talk about the sieges and the ledge at 1:00-she’ll be preceded by a summer lunch of grilled hot dogs and sides at 12:30.
