School Counselors provide short term counseling or on-going, spaced out "check ins" with students. This is not to replace long term therapy or counseling for students who require a specially trained counselor or therapist.
I work to adhere to confidentiality in meeting with students. However, there are situations when confidentiality ethically can not be held. This includes situations when a student or other students are being harmed, when a student or other students are going to be harmed, or when there is danger within our school.
Many students benefit from speaking with a counselor one-on-one. This can be for a variety of reasons. Typically, a student at the elementary level is referred by a parent or teacher. In older grades, parents and teachers can still refer a student to see the counselor, but students are also more likely to seek out a counselor on their own.
Small group counseling can allow students to collaborate with other students to gain skills to overcome an area of challenge. Small groups offer skills and techniques to students who are of similar age and experiencing similar challenges.
If you or your child feel they could benefit from being in a small group, please let me know. If there are not enough students to form a group, I can meet with them individually.
