In order to understand the setting of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, in groups you will prepare a timeline of historical events leading up to and surrounding the setting and time of writing of the novel. Each of these events is significant to our understanding of the plot, as well as to the events that surrounded Harper Lee’s writing of the novel.

To create the timeline, group members will read the following articles on the topics below. As you read, identify the basic important details of the event. Do this in your own words.
1. List the date of the topic or event?
2. List the topic or event.
3. List 4 to 6 basic details that summarize the main details:
Who are the important people involved?
What are the basic, important details of the topic or event?
Where did the topic or event take place?
4. State why or how this topic or event is important to American history.
On your paper, list in order the topics/events and details in a clear, clean, and creative way.
Create a small symbol or image for each topic/event.
Use color to organize your timeline.
Place the setting of To Kill a Mockingbird (1930s) and the publishing date (1960) on the timeline as well.
Groups will divide up the work equally. No one should be waiting around or wasting time.
