General Information:
Grades represent one method of communication to parents and students regarding how a student is doing in class. Grades are important and success, as measured through high grades, should be the goal of all students. We encourage students to work hard, to study and to prepare in order to achieve high grades. At Waterloo High School, grades are based on the adopted district grading scale for grades 2 through 12 as follows:
A+ 100 - 98 B+ 89 - 87 C+ 79 - 77 D+ 69 - 67 F 0 - 59
A 97 - 93 B 86 – 83 C 76 - 73 D 66 - 63
A- 92 - 90 B- 82 - 80 C- 72 - 70 D- 62 - 60
Guides for letter grades:
A - Complete, regular work of outstanding scholarship and an excellent degree of intellectual ability and initiative.
B - Complete, regular work of superior scholarship done in a sustained and intelligent manner.
C - Fair work meeting the demands of the teacher and showing some earnest attempt at good preparation.
D - Work of the lowest passing quality barely covering minimum daily assignments.
F - Complete lack of effort, preparation and application. May also result due to poor attendance and/or loss of credit.
Once a grade has been earned for a course, it becomes a part of the student's permanent record and grade point average. It cannot be removed from either by any method such as repeating the course or taking the course in summer school, etc.
In order to receive a passing grade and therefore credit for a course, each student must complete all course requirements as listed by the teacher of the class, take the semester exam(s) unless exempt or excused, and not exceed the maximum number of class period absences. These conditions must be met within a reasonable time period determined by the teacher. The Principal's approval is required if the time period extends beyond the end of each semester. In any course where the requirements are not completed, the student will receive an F letter grade for the final grade and no credit will be issued. Only the Principal can waive this rule.
Grades will be recorded and report cards issued for each nine-week grading period. Semester exam(s) will count 20% of the semester grade for any course. Computation of semester grade will be done by doubling the percent of the grading periods and adding it to the percent of the exam grade and dividing by 5. The final grade for a year class will be determined by averaging the 1st and 2nd semester grades.
Example:
The final grade in any course is an evaluation by the teacher of the student's achievement and progress from the first class session through the final session. At no point can a student assume he or she has earned enough credit for a passing grade. Though a student may have earned sufficient grades to pass a course, a student must continue with reasonable effort in each respective course. If not, a teacher may request a deviation in grading from the Principal. The Principal may permit a lower grade to be assigned by the teacher, if, in his judgment, the student did not maintain a reasonable effort and satisfactory progress.
