ACT/SAT FAQS

When should students take the ACT/SAT?

ALL 10th grade students will take the Pre-ACT at VHHS.

ALL 11th grade students will take the ACT + Writing at VHHS.

When and how often to test is an INDIVIDUAL decision.  There is no one answer that works for every student.  Most seniors will have taken the ACT and/or SAT an average of three times.  There are often really good reasons to re-test.  Sometimes a student may test once and be finished.

Most students begin testing in junior year because they have probably completed the coursework corresponding to the test material. They have also likely completed the Pre-ACT (predictor/practice for ACT) and PSAT (predictor/practice for SAT) as 10th graders and, therefore, know what to expect on the tests.  A student who is enrolled in multiple honors level classes may be ready to attempt the test earlier, especially if the student has already completed Geometry and a portion (or all) of Algebra II/Trig and is enrolled in honors level English.

Beware of testing “burnout”!  Students who test too early and too often may be resistant to repeated attempts!

How do students get fee waivers?

Fee waivers are available to juniors and seniors who receive free or reduced lunch. Students are able to receive up to 2 waivers throughout high school. Qualified students should see the College Counselor.

Where should students send scores?

Choosing to send scores to VHHS and to colleges at the time of registration for ACT/SAT will be sent at no additional charge. If students decide to send the scores later, they will be charged a fee. Remember, colleges will look at the student’s highest score for admission consideration.
