The Faculty Senate is your voice in shaping the academic, research, and service mission of the Uniformed Services University (USU). Working hand in hand with the Faculty Assembly, the Senate provides a forum for faculty to share ideas, raise concerns, and help guide policies that affect our university community.
Whether you are new to USU or a long-standing member of the faculty, this is the place to learn how the Senate represents you, how to get involved, and how our shared governance makes the university stronger.
What We Do
Represent faculty voices – The Senate reflects the collective views of the Faculty from across the University, ensuring faculty perspectives are heard at every level of university decision-making.
Advise on key issues – From educational policy to research priorities and faculty welfare, we provide recommendations to Deans, the President of USU, and the Board of Regents.
Foster communication – We keep faculty across all schools and institutes connected, informed, and engaged in university-wide discussions.
Support committees & governance – Senators serve on committees that shape policy around curriculum, research, faculty development, appointments, promotion, and more.
Who We Are
Faculty Assembly: Every faculty member at USU (Instructor level and above) is part of the Assembly. This body meets at least three times per year and is the foundation of faculty governance.
Faculty Senate: A group of 24 elected faculty Senators, along with four elected officers (President, President-Elect, Past President, and Secretary-Treasurer). The Senate meets monthly and manages the work of the Assembly between meetings.
Why It Matters
Shared governance ensures that faculty have a meaningful role in shaping the university’s future. By participating, you help strengthen USU’s academic environment, advocate for faculty welfare, and enhance the quality of education and research that define our mission.
How to Get Involved
Attend a Faculty Senate Meeting (held monthly on Thursdays in the Board of Regents room and virtually).
Reach out to your Senator to share your input on issues under discussion.
Join a Senate Committee (open to all faculty members).
Consider running for office or for a Senate seat — elections are held annually.
