Do You Know the Difference?

Rude vs Mean vs Bullying Behaviors

With "bullying" being a hot topic, here is some information to consider when talking to your child(ren).

Rude

  • Accidentally hurtful
  • One time (stop after being asked)

Mean

  • Hurtful on purpose
  • One time (stop after being asked)

Bullying Behaviors

  • Hurtful on purpose
  • Keep doing it even when asked to stop

When determining whether something is rude, mean, or a bullying behaviors ask your child what was going on when the negative altercation took place. Try to determine what part your child might have played by looking at the other perspective. Check with your child's teacher, myself or administration if you have concerns.

Calling someone a bully is not helpful, it is hurtful. Instead, try pulling the behavior away from the child. Talk about how bullying behaviors are hurtful not label a kid as being bad. Kids are kids and all kids(and adults) make mistakes. Even if a kid exhibits bullying behaviors, (s)he can learn to change and grow. Haven't we all?

  • Be assertive and let the other person know that you don't like what they are doing and ask him/her to stop.
  • Try to see the other person's perspective.
  • Go to a safe place if you feel like you're in danger.
  • Talk to a safe keeper (a trusted adult).
