A study on embankment stability, originally under conditions of partial saturation

Soil deposits in their natural states, or man-made soil compacted structures (i.e. roads, embankments, earth dams, slopes and fills), may have different degrees of saturation, depending on the local environmental conditions.

Soil engineering properties change with the degree of saturation affecting the stability of engineering structures. Furthermore, as a result of machinery vibration or environmental seismic activity, embankments during operation may be exposed to cyclic or dynamic loading.

Numerical analysis using the finite differences method for the modelling of transient water flow, resulting from infiltration processes into soil slopes was made. The influence of the initial degree of saturation, rainfall intensity and duration on the slope factor of safety was investigated by the shear strength reduction method. The behaviour of slopes with different factors of safety was analysed under the application of dynamic loads with different frequency.

Dynamic properties of stabilized rich sulfate content soils

High sulphate soils are common in Texas. They are expansive materials which are usually treated for highway construction with lime or fly ash, or a combination of both. The effects that the stabilizing agent has on the general engineering properties have been studied and are reasonably well understood.

However, the effect on the dynamic response is not well understood. Key dynamic properties, namely shear modulus and material damping, were obtained via a fixed-free resonant column apparatus suitable for shear strain amplitudes ranging from 0.001% to 0.1%. The influence of confinement level on the shear modulus was studied and also the curing period along with the mellowing time.
