Fee Name
Descriptive name, written for people outside the department. Name should be meaningful to someone not familiar with the fee.

Explanation of the purpose of the fee that is understandable to students.

Category
The classification of the fee, used by the Budget Office for analysis.

Justification
Required explanation of what the fee covers, why itβs not part of tuition, and how the rate was set.

Description of Students Charged/Included
Explanation of who the fee applies to, such as student group, major, or academic plan. (Note: Course/Class fees define students via course/section instead.)

Optional field to describe any students who should not be charged the fee.

Charge Method
Indicates whether the fee is charged in addition to tuition or if it is a fee in lieu of tuition.

Category

Used to create dimensions with different rates for residents and non-residents. If there is no differentiation, use "Not Designated".

Estimated Revenue
Projected total income from this fee.

Number of Total Student Registrations
Expected number of times the fee will be charged (e.g., students Γ terms).

Assessment Method
How the fee is posted:
Posted by tuition calculation
Fee will be set up in PeopleSoft and automatically assessed to students.
Posted by department
Fee will be manually added to a student's account in PeopleSoft.
Not collected by Student FinanceΒ
The responsible department has responsibility for collecting and depositing any funds. The fee will not be set up in PeopleSoft.Β
Fee submitters must include an explanation for this assessment method, if selected.

Rate Type
How the fee is calculated.
Flat
A single amount is charged to the student.
Per Credit
The number of student credits determines the amount charged.
VariableΒ
The student is charged a variable amount based on circumstances other than enrollment.

Used when charging beyond a credit plateau. Indicates:

Maximum Amount (optional)
Cap per student, per term.

Fund, Dept ID, Program, Account, Chartfield1 and Chartfield2Β
Account (i.e. chartstring) information for where the revenue from the fee should go. To split the revenue is split between chartstrings, add a row for the second chartstring. Make sure you state the dollar amount or percentage that should go to each string.

Item Type (optional)
Financial code used in PeopleSoft. If you do not know (or do not have) an item type, Student Financials-IT will enter the item type for you. Contact Student Financials at SFHelp@umn.edu with questions and description updates.

Subject & Course Number
The academic department offering the course, course number and name.
Applies to: π Course/Class Fee only
Component or Section
When adding a course or class to a fee, state if the fee should:
Charge the course (charge all sections)Β
Select the Component that should be charged. The drop-down list contains valid components associated with the course. If a course has more than one component, select the one most appropriate for the fee.
Charge only specific sections
Enter the Section that should be charged. The section code is not validated as they are usually entered far in advance. Take care to verify your entry and be sure to update the fee, if necessary, based on scheduling changes.

Terms
Which terms the fee should be charged.Β
Once a term has started, the term box is not checked by default. You can check the box but will receive a warning message.Β
Once the verification deadline has passed for a term, you cannot select that term.

Attachments
Upload any supporting documents about the fee, such as spreadsheets, memos, or approvals.
Applies to: β All fee types
Comments
Use for notes about unique situations, routing exceptions, or reviewer instructions. You can email the comment to the specified individuals.
