Research Interests and Current Projects: The ultimate goal of our research is to manage the human gut microbiome to improve health. We are currently testing a metabolic model to better understand the influence of dietary fiber on the production of short chain fatty acids - one of the major outputs of the gut microbiome. These studies are being conducted simultaneously in a healthy human cohort and with synthetic communities of microbes studied in vitro and in gnotobiotic mice.
