4th Lessons 23-24

Lesson 1: September 2023

I visited each classroom to introduce myself to students and review my role as a school counselor.  I always want students to know that my job is about helping them, and I help them through classroom lessons, small groups, individual counseling, and consulting with parents and teachers. Students also completed a short check-in activity to help me and their teacher know how they feel about the school year so far.

Lesson 2: October 2023

We focused on bullying prevention during this lesson. Students learned what bullying is and differences between a bullying situation and a mean moment. They practiced determining if different situations were bullying or not bullying. Then, we learned the importance of reporting bullying situations to an adult at school as soon as possible.

Lesson 3: November 2023

During this lesson, students learned and reviewed conflict resolution strategies.  In the October lesson, students learned to identify the difference between a bullying situation and a rude, annoying, or mean moment. This lesson was an important follow-up on strategies to help with these other problems.  Many of the strategies were familiar to students from lessons in previous grades. After learning and reviewing the strategies, we discussed and practiced using these in different scenarios.

Lesson 4: January 2024

This week, we focused on the acronym T.H.I.N.K. and how words are powerful in a helpful way but also be very hurtful.  I used the book Trouble Talk by Trudy Ludwig to help students understand the power of words in real life examples. We looked at ways to prevent hurting others with our words.

Lesson 5: February 2024

During this lesson, students learned about 5 specific friendship boundaries. We talked about the importance of staying in bounds with friendships to keep things respectful and fun instead of annoying and mean. Students discussed and practiced with different scenarios.

Lesson 6: March 2024

We focused on taking responsibility and problem solving during this lesson with the book It's Not My Fault by Julia Cook. Students learned the importance of accepting responsibility instead of making excuses. They practiced sorting phrases in responsible problem solver statements vs. statements that were excuses & blaming others.

Lesson 7: April 2024

We had a lot of fun exploring careers! Students took a short career interest inventory to help them consider how their interests and abilities might connect to future career choices. Then, they learned about the Occupational Outlook Handbook and were able to explore different occupation groups and specific careers that interest them.
