2nd Lessons 23-24
Lesson 1: September 2023
I used this first lesson in second grade classrooms to introduce myself to students and review my role as a school counselor. I always want students to know that my job is about helping them, and I help them through classroom lessons, small groups, individual counseling, and consulting with parents and teachers. We read the book The Rabbit Listened, and students did a get-to-know-you activity.

Lesson 2: October 2023
We focused on bullying prevention during this lesson. Students learned what bullying is and differences between a bullying situation and a mean moment. They practiced determining if different situations were bullying or not bullying. Then, we learned the importance of reporting bullying situations to an adult at school as soon as possible.

Lesson 3: November/December 2023
During this lesson, we learned problem solving strategies to deal with teasing and put downs from the book Simon's Hook. Grandma Rose teaches Simon that instead of biting, he can 1) Ignore, 2) Agree, 3) Distract or Change the Subject, 4) Laugh or Make a Joke, or 5) Stay Away. Students practiced using the strategies through role play and different scenarios.

Lesson 4: January 2024
Students learned how to appropriate apologize when they make a mistake. We read the book Sorry! by Trudy Ludwig to understand the difference between a quick and meaningless "sorry" and a sincere apology. Students practiced independently developing an apology using steps in the image shown.

Lesson 5: February 2024
In this lesson, we learned about changing our thinking to help us when things feel hard. Students learned about our mindset and that everyone feels stuck sometimes! We practiced changing our stuck/fixed thoughts to a growth mindset.

Lesson 6: March 2024
We learned about the importance of empathy this week- trying to understand another person's perspective. We read the book Stand in My Shoes by Bob Sornson. Students learned that we can show empathy when we THINK about what about how the person might feel and then SAY or DO something to show we care. We practiced what we would think, say, and do in different scenarios.

Lesson 7: April 2024
Students love learning about careers! We used the book Being Wendy to explore the connection between interests and careers. During conversation and activities, students learned about different occupations and had the opportunity to share about ones that sound interesting to them. In the book the main character, Wendy, struggles to make a decision about what she wants to be, and this helps facilitate discussion around being open to all career paths and how this is a time for second graders to dream about different career opportunities.
