Membership in the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) became a requirement for each Resident effective September 1, 2003, per Article 21.01(a) of the PARA Agreement. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have up to date CMPA coverage. You must also notify CMPA when going to a different city on elective. The residency program does not reimburse expenses for this. PGME requires proof of coverage – if this has not been done, you will not be allowed to work. Link: http://www.cmpa-acpm.ca
Each province has a College which provides physicians, both resident and staff, with a license number. It is your responsibility to ensure that you possess an educational license to practice medicine in Alberta. Similarly, when going away on elective, you must apply for an educational license in that province. Link: www.cpsa.ab.ca
