The Studio school founded by the late Kim Simpson is now closed. These pages are left here as a legacy and reference.
Physical Development
Our environment is designed so that the children are given 'freedom of movement' and every opportunity to develop their gross and fine motor skills. We have wonderful facilities both inside and outside in our lovely garden for children to enjoy and maximize their physical development. Our outside play village is second to none and we put great emphasis on the importance of outside play and daily contact with nature. There are weekly dance and yoga classes and opportunities for dedicated sports session.
Practical Life Exercises
Practical Life is a wonderful way of allowing the children to develop key life skills and encourage co-ordination and concentration through care of self and care of the environment: pouring, sweeping, sorting, dusting, pairing...
Literacy
An indirect age-appropriate approach is used to facilitate roads towards reading, writing, social and comprehension skills. We have a book corner and a wealth of story telling, news talks and conversation. Indirect and direct roads into reading are facilitated through a 'phonic' approach. Children learn to write their name, and to recognise and sound lower case letters of the alphabet.
Communication and Language
At the Studio, communication and language development are key and children are exposed to this through small language groups, singing and rhyming circles, news time, story time and other opportunities for children to talk and share with their friends and teachers.
Sensorial education
As a Montessori Nursery, we have a rich variety of materials that attract the child and help him/her to explore and continually extend understanding and knowledge through touch, sight, sound, smell, and stereognostic sense.
Personal, Social and Emotional DevelopmentOpportunities are provided for daily interaction, fostering co-operation and empathy with peers and the nurturing of self-esteem. Confidence and independence are given the highest priority.
Expressive Art and Design
A profusion of techniques and materials with the emphasis on free expression and the development of creative skills. We have a dedicated art corner where children can explore painting, printing, colour mixing, modelling with clay to name but just a few. The art in the nursery is linked to projects, festivals and celebrations.
Understanding of the World
A simple and child-friendly introduction to science, botany, history, geography, nature and conservation are all provided with a play-based approach and through the specialised Montessori materials. We have termly visits to Kew Gardens and a popular afternoon nature school.
MathsIn both language and maths our Montessori environment is richly endowed and greatly exceeds the expectations of the Early Years Curriculum. The children have lots of ways to explore number and counting, as well as developing number concepts through the Montessori and other sensorial materials; exploring height, width, size, number, weight and length experientially.
Cultural Education
We believe that spirituality in the child is nurtured through a sense of awe and wonder for the natural world in which we live and a respect for others and the environment. We celebrate the Christian Festivals and nurture an awareness of all religious denominations and cultures by introducing the children to Diwali, Eid, Chinese New Year and Carnival.
Music & Movement
With 2 dance specialists on the team and a general love of music within the team, the children are given lots of opportunities for singing, dancing and percussion. Every year, we hold a Christmas Nativity and a summer concert full of The Studio's top songs and dances.
