Descriptive Writing

Descriptive writing is used to describe and object, person, experience, emotion or situation in vivid detail. It creates a picture in the reader's mind by paying close attention to the details, using all of your five senses.

Descriptive writing:

  • Uses clear, concise, vivid language (use stallion instead of horse)
  • Appeals to the senses (how does it smell, feel, sound, taste, look?)
  • Taps into emotions
  • Leaves a clear impression
  • Varies in sentence structure

Avoid:

  • too many adjectives
  • too many adverbs
  • Cliches
