Ed Konicki is the former coordinator of the St. Joe's Cross Country program who passed away from cancer. The scholarship was established by Sean Savage to honor his commitment to the program.
Eligible Participants
An eighth grade student (male or female) who has run cross country a minimum of three years, including his/her eighth grade year for St. Joseph’s. This student must attend a Catholic high school, and the funds will be directed to that high school on behalf of the recipient for tuition. If a student is eligible and is awarded this scholarship, he/she may also earn other scholarships awarded for St. Joseph’s eighth graders.
Scholarship
The amount of the scholarship will be determined by March 1st each year. The goal each year is to award $1,000 to the recipient. The committee may award more than one scholarship if the selection committee decides this is the correct action to take. The scholarship may be split in this situation.
Announcement
A bulletin and school announcement will be made the first to middle of April each year soliciting applicants, and applications should be completed by the second week in May. The committee meets at the end of May to select a winner which is announced at the 8th grade awards assembly.
Criteria
The recipient of the Ed Konicki Memorial Scholarship must best exemplify the qualities of Coach Ed Konicki.
These include:
· Good Christian example
· Leadership through example
· Determination
· Concern for others
· A positive and upbeat spirit
These qualities need to be highlighted in an essay, which is a requirement for eligibility to receive this scholarship.
The Application
A 300-400 word essay needs to be turned in through the school in an envelope marked
“Ed Konicki Memorial Scholarship” Topics to be addressed include:
Explain how your experience in cross country has helped you become a better person.
Discuss a specific lesson you have learned from this sport that you can apply to life overall. (Be specific)
Describe a hardship/challenge you have faced in life and how you have overcome it.
How has cross country helped you in being a leader? Please cite examples of how you have shown leadership on the team.
What role has God played in shaping you as an athlete and a person?
Letter of Recommendation
A letter of recommendation from the current teacher of the applicant is required to be submitted.
Award Presentation
The award will be presented at the 8th grade awards assembly at the end of the school year.
Selection Committee will include the following:
· The Principal of St. Joseph School or designate
· The Pastor of St. Joseph Parish or his designate
· The Athletic Coordinator of Saint Joseph Parish
· The Cross Country Commissioner for Saint Joseph Parish or designate
The selection committee will independently review the applications and a committee meeting will be held by the end of May. The selection will be done by blind vote after up to a 30 minute discussion.
A plaque will be made for this scholarship, and it will list the recipient each year. The plaque is displayed in the hallway leading to the East Campus gym.
