Year 4 had the most incredible day this week learning about a variety of Geography skills (and showing off some of the skills they had learnt during the year!) We began the session looking at Ordnance Survey maps. It was a lot of fun trying to guess what all of the symbols meant! We then went on to look at compasses and we figured out how to find North on a compass, before finding East, and then West. We were very relieved when we all ended up facing the same way each time! It was amazing to learn that we could even find North in the dark by finding the North star. The final skill we learnt was figuring out how to measure a distance of 10 metres just using our pacing, a skill that Mr Hall said he used regularly during his expeditions.
Once we had all of this knowledge secure in our minds, we were able to use our new Mapping skills using a map which had been hand-drawn by Mr Hall this morning to locate flags which had been placed around the school. This orienteering session was a lot of fun and we are all determined to continue to find the flags during Active Play and lunch.
We ended the day listening to the amazing adventures that Mr Hall has been on in the Arctic, including hearing about Svalbard, which we first encountered in our Guided Reading lessons, when we were reading our book, The Last Bear. We enjoyed seeing his tiny tent and he was even brave enough to dress up in all of his cold weather gear in this boiling heat! Needless to say, he took off his coat, hat and gloves very quickly afterwards! We learnt how to defend ourselves against a polar bear and all about why we would have to bring our own food rations to the Arctic (even if they do all taste the same!) We couldn’t believe all of the wild animals that Mr Hall had encountered and we loved hearing about his canine companions who have their own backpacks!
All in all, it was a very informative and active day and we are so grateful to Mr Hall for taking time out of his very busy exploring schedule to pay us a visit!
