The Light of Christ

In Celebration of the Word this week, we looked ahead to the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, where we heard about Jesus beginning his ministry by revealing the truth and calling upon ordinary people - fishermen like Peter and Andrew - to follow him, “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.”

Linked to the Gospel value of 'truth', we recognised that all have our own light, given to us by God, that we are asked to shine and share with the world: our kindness, our honesty, our forgiveness. When we share this light, we are revealing God's truth and following in Jesus' mission. Throughout the school this week, we have been celebrating the lights of the children and asked them to think about how their light could be demonstrated through their child-led Celebration of the Word, RE work and prayer.

National Champion!

Massive congratulations to Seb and his football team - Surrey Nomads - for their impressive national win in the Junior Premier League this season. Seb and his team mates battled fierce competition to earn the South of England and National titles last weekend!

After a heartbreaking encounter in the 2025 season, when Seb's team came so close to the title, it was worth the perseverance and determination to return this year and bag the silverware. What an inspiration you are Seb!

Little City - Big Dreams

Reception had an amazing time during the Little City experience earlier this week. They had the chance to explore a supermarket, building site, hairdresser, vet, launderette, fire station, and school. The children were so well‑mannered and behaved beautifully while engaging with all the exciting activities. They made us feel incredibly proud. I wonder which part your child enjoyed the most?

No place like home...

This term in Geography, Year 4 have been busy with their Comparative Study of Guildford and Coleraine. After exploring some of the key features of Coleraine last week, the children turned their attention closer to home as they delved into the fascinating history of Guildford.

The children loved learning how Guildford began as a natural landscape before people gradually settled there. They discovered how it grew into a bustling market town, became an important stop-off point for weary travellers heading to London, and later welcomed a King and a castle. We also explored how the arrival of the railway linking Portsmouth to London helped shape Guildford into the lively town we recognise today. The story of Guildford’s journey through time really captured everyone’s imagination!

To bring their learning to life, the children labelled a bird’s-eye view of Guildford as it once was and created their own story maps to show how the town developed over time. Many were amazed to hear the story of the place they now call home and were full of thoughtful comments and questions. It has been wonderful to see such enthusiasm and curiosity as Year 4 continue their Geography journey!

Rigour in Writing

In Year 2, we have recently started a ten minute afternoon 'speedy sentences' session. This gives the children the opportunity to write a sentence (dictated or independent) and really focus on the fundamentals of their writing. Expectations for children are that they are mostly using capital letters and full stops correctly, and are starting to use exclamation marks and question marks, too. We have 'words of the week' which are helping the children widen their vocabulary and learn how to spell some of our common exception words. Handwriting is a big focus too, really thinking about which of their letters should be tall, which ones are descenders, and thinking of their sizing in relation to the other letters.

Space, Sparks and Scientific Smiles

Years 5's trip to Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium was packed with curiosity, discovery and wide‑eyed wonder. The children explored hands‑on exhibits, tested out scientific ideas through play and immersed themselves in the awe‑inspiring planetarium show, which brought the night sky to life in spectacular fashion. From giggles in the sound zone to gasps during the space journey, the day was a fantastic celebration of learning beyond the classroom and left everyone buzzing with new knowledge and excitement.

St Joseph's Ambassadors

On Monday, four of our Year 6 pupils were invited to lead a transition workshop alongside Mrs Hua at St Peter’s. The children are a real credit to our school; speaking confidently and articulately as they shared a day in the life of a primary school pupil, their hopes and worries, what helps them to feel safe at school, and the opportunities for pupil leadership at St Joseph’s.

The secondary school teachers were extremely impressed by both their confidence and their clarity of expression. Most importantly, our pupils helped the staff at St Peter’s to gain a deeper insight of just how well prepared St Joseph’s pupils are by the time they reach Year 6 as they transition to Year 7.

Good News!

In RE this week, Year 1 have been learning about Jesus announcing his mission and how we, as believers of this, can share the Good News. In his ministry, Jesus calls us to follow Him and show love and kindness to everyone like He teaches us to.

The children made posters showcasing ways that they could share the Good News and committed to living out one of these ways by the end of the week. Well done, Year 1, on your thoughtful reflections and spiritual growth this week.

Learning the Bones in Our Bodies!

This week in Science, Year 3 have been busy becoming mini‑experts on the human skeleton. We’ve been learning the names of some of the most important bones in our bodies and discovering why they matter. We started by looking at a model skeleton and spotting the bones we already knew. Lots of us recognised the skull, which protects our brain, and the ribs, which keep our heart and lungs safe. We also learned some new names, like the femur, which is the longest bone in the body, and the spine, which helps us stand up tall.

To help us remember the names, we labelled diagrams, completed a floor puzzle, and even felt for some of our own bones — like the clavicle (collarbone) and patella (kneecap). Everyone worked brilliantly as scientists, asking questions and sharing ideas. By the end of the week, we could talk confidently about how the skeleton supports us, protects us, and helps us move. Year 3 should feel very proud of their learning — we’re well on our way to becoming bone experts!

All Hail Macbeth!

Year 6 produced some brilliant work this week as they stepped into the role of Macbeth and wrote letters to Lady Macbeth. After studying the opening of Shakespeare’s play, the children wrote as though they had just returned victorious from battle, proudly describing their defeat of the Norwegians and the honour of becoming Thane of Cawdor.

Their writing became even more exciting when they described Macbeth’s encounter with the three witches. The pupils captured the eerie atmosphere and the unsettling prophecies with real imagination, showing how these strange predictions planted a dangerous “seed of desire” in Macbeth’s mind.

What made the letters stand out was the children’s confidence in using Shakespearean language. Words like thee, hath, and doth appeared naturally in their writing, giving their letters an authentic and dramatic tone.

The final pieces were creative, atmospheric and full of character. It was a fantastic effort from the whole class and a strong start to our journey through Macbeth. Take a look at this wonderful work by Ellery, Ana and Nevin.

Reading Revival

Congratulations to our newly appointed Reading Champions! This group of book-loving Year 6 children have undertaken the task of helping to promote a love of reading around the school. Three champions have been assigned to each year group and their jobs involve ensuring there is a wide selection of books available for the children, encouraging the children to spread their love of books by creating recommendations for others, purchasing new books and reading stories. The Champions have already set to work, using their initiative to support our younger children especially. They have been able to live our Gospel tool this week by shining their light of loving reading!

This poridge is too lumpy!

Continuing on from last week’s story activities, the children have been building on their enjoyment of familiar traditional tales through a range of engaging, hands-on experiences. We have been decorating our own gingerbread men, using different materials and colours to encourage creativity while strengthening fine motor skills. Inspired by Goldilocks and the Three Bears, we have been exploring size, comparing big, medium and small objects and using this language confidently during play. This has supported early mathematical understanding in a meaningful and practical way. The children have also loved acting out their own versions of the stories using props and puppets. Through role play, they have been developing confidence, communication skills and imagination, while learning to take turns and share ideas. We have been playing new games which have been supporting the children’s mathematical development by helping them recognise dot patterns, strengthening their number recognition and subitising skills.

Light & Truth with 2N

Congratulations to St Non's Class for their exceptional class worship this morning. The children reflected on the theme of light throughout the Bible, from the creation story, to Moses and the burning bush, to the star of Bethlehem. All these lights lead us to the person of Jesus - the light of the world! The children explained how Christ's light reveals the truth about how we should live and behave and gave beautiful examples of what this looks like in their own families, during their gorgeous performance of, "This little light of mine". What a memorable and heartfelt time of worship.

True Witnesses

A special well done to our Witness Award winners this week. These children have made a special effort to share the light of Christ with others in our school community (and beyond) through their words and actions this week. Congratulations and God bless you!
