The Peace of Christ

In Celebration of the Word this week, we looked ahead to the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time and heard Jesus’ teaching from the Beatitudes: “Happy the peacemakers”. Jesus reminds us that real happiness comes from choosing peace; not just avoiding conflict but helping to bring calm, kindness and compassion wherever we go. Linked to the Fruit of the Spirit that encourages us to be calm and content, even in the midst of turmoil and uncertainty.

Throughout the school this week, we have been celebrating the joy that peace brings to our lives. In their RE lessons and child-led Celebration of the Word, the children have been encouraged to practise small acts of peacemaking: listening respectfully, using polite and gentle words with each other and solving problems together.

Athletic Action

We are incredibly proud to share the fantastic success of our Year 5 and 6 Sportshall Athletics team! After a gruelling trial process and several weeks of focused training, the children represented our school brilliantly at their competition today, finishing 2nd overall – the best result we have ever achieved!

Every child gave their absolute all across a wide range of events, showing determination, teamwork and resilience from start to finish. Their performances were outstanding, and it was wonderful to see their confidence and commitment shine through. A special mention must go to those pupils who bravely stepped into events they had not prepared for, due to illness or injury affecting other team members. Their willingness to help the team and rise to the challenge truly demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and character.

As well as their sporting success, the children were exceptionally well behaved throughout the day. They supported one another, listened carefully, and represented our school with pride. They were an absolute credit to themselves, their families, and the whole school community.

Congratulations to every member of the team! You should be incredibly proud of what you achieved. We hope your success inspires our Year 3 and 4 pupils as they prepare for their own competition in March!

Digital Data

This week in Year 2, each class has had a Computing Day. We were focusing on data, tally charts and pictograms. This links well with our learning in Maths, too. The National Curriculum states that children should use technology to create, organise, store and manipulate data. We were able to use iPads and chrome books to make different charts. The children showed information we had collected such as different minibeasts we found in the playground and favourite colours in the class. They will soon be able to manage your family finances!

Ancient Baghdad

Year 6 threw themselves into this week’s History lesson as they stepped back into the Islamic Golden Age and worked like real historians to uncover what the ancient city of Baghdad might have looked like. Using a collection of clues, including comments from travellers who visited the city at the time and evidence from archaeological discoveries, they had to piece together information to build a clear picture of this remarkable place. Everyone was reminded to read all the clues carefully before beginning, because each detail helped reveal something new about the city’s layout, its buildings and its importance.

Once they had gathered their evidence, the children created a bird’s-eye view of ancient Baghdad. They used the clues to decide where key features should go and how the city might have been organised. To show how they brought all the information together, they numbered the different features in pen, linking each part of their drawing to the evidence that inspired it. By the end of the lesson, they had produced thoughtful, detailed reconstructions and gained a real understanding of how historians use sources to rebuild the past.

The Course of a River

In Geography this week, Year 3 explored the journey of a river. They learnt many new words, including meander, river banks, floodplain and estuary and then drew a simple diagram showing the journey of a river from the source to the mouth. It was lovely to see the children take care with their work to produce a neat, clear diagram they were proud of. Well done everyone!

Year 1 Investigates...

Year 1 have been scientists in the making this week! We are currently looking at materials in our Science learning and our lesson this week explored which materials are waterproof and which aren't. The children were given a variety of materials and asked which one would be best to make a raincoat used to keep dry. There were a mixture of predictions and children were impressed to see that some materials take longer to absorb water than others, but are still not waterproof! Well done Year 1 - great scientific enquiry this week!

Letters to John

In Year 4, we have been continuing our RE learning through our unit From Galilee to Jerusalem, exploring important moments from Jesus’ life and what they tell us about his identity.

Last week, the children reflected on Jesus’ powerful question to his followers: “Who do you say I am?” They shared thoughtful ideas and began to understand how people’s beliefs about Jesus were shaped by what they saw and heard.

This week, our learning moved on to John the Baptist and his arrest. The children learnt how John bravely spoke out against Herod, encouraging people to live according to God’s laws. While John was in prison, he sent his followers to ask Jesus if he really was the Messiah they had been waiting for. We discovered that Jesus did not answer directly. Instead, he encouraged John’s followers to look at the evidence for themselves – what they could see Jesus doing and hear him saying.

To deepen their understanding, the children took part in a creative writing task. Using the evidence they had gathered, they wrote letters to John the Baptist in his prison cell, explaining Jesus’ response and sharing their own thoughts about who they believe Jesus is. The letters showed excellent empathy, reflection and growing confidence in expressing religious ideas, as shown in this beautiful example from Eme in 4J.

Looking for clues...

Reception have been learning about police officers this week. We have been solving crimes and collecting evidence after a crime scene took place in our classrooms! We also looked at our own fingerprints using balloons and ink to see the different patterns. Did you know there are three main ridge patterns? Loops, whorls and arches. Can you spot what these prints are?

Dancing Through Life...

In PE this week, Year 5 have been practising some seriously good dance moves! We've been learning lots of different genres from Rock and Roll to Mayan tribal dances. The children have been learning to choreograph dances by adapting and developing actions and steps from these different styles, working towards an expressive and fluent performance. It's been a lot of fun!

St Teresa's Peace

Our thanks and admiration to 1T for a stunning class worship this morning. The children led a beautiful, reflective time of prayer and celebration this morning, helping us to understand the value of peace. The children explained how we say at Mass, "Peace be with you" and how these words reflect the actions of Christ Jesus, who calmed the storm and brought peace to waters. In the same way, Jesus will bring peace to our hearts when we choose to spend time with him in still, quiet prayer. Through song, drama and art the children showed us the power of peace. Well done 1T! We concluded our time of worship with the motivational hymn, "Prince of Peace" which the school sang with gusto!

Peaceful Witnesses

Congratulations to this week's Witness Award winners - our peacemakers. All these children have shared the peace of Christ this week in their words and actions around school, sometimes bringing peace by calming challenging situation and sometimes encouraging peace by modelling the contentment this Fruit of the Spirit brings.
