French IV

What to expect in French IV

French IV students advance their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills as they develop more control over complex vocabulary and structures. Grammatically, they add the perfect tenses, many kinds of pronouns, and subjunctive. Thematically, they study more history and art, especially Impressionism, technology, the environment, families and relationships, and AP themes. Some units are supported by viewing and discussing French films. The class is conducted in French, and oral and written presentations are in French. Students are introduced to more French literature through short stories, poems, plays and / or novels.

Students are expected to have strong control of present, passe compose, imparfait, futur and conditionnel forms of the verbs they have learned. They are also expected to speak French consistently in class for 75% of the time.

Beginning in the Spring of 2014 this class is combined with AP French. The classes work on most units together, allowing level 4 students to build proficiency with AP tasks, even as they master level 4 grammatical structures and concepts. Students with the requisite level of proficiency may do more AP level tasks.
