Q: What exactly is happening?
A: Per NYU policy, every Stern employee must be consolidated to a single Stern account, and this account must be in Net ID format (ex. jd123@stern.nyu.edu). Please refer to the emails you receive from Stern IT for the procedure for your specific case. When the process is complete you will have only one Stern account, the Stern NetID account. You will then log into all Stern sites and services with your Stern NetID account. This project does not impact your NYU netid account whatsoever (jd123@nyu.edu).
Q: When will this happen?
A: In Summer or Fall 2021 you will be contacted with at least 2-weeks advance notice.
Q: What will happen to my Stern ID email address (ex. jdoe@stern.nyu.edu)? How can I send emails from there?
A: All Stern email aliases will remain intact and will direct email to your Stern NetID account (ex. jdoe@gmail.stern.nyu.edu will direct to jd123@stern.nyu.edu). To send email from your alias please follow these instructions. Other Gmail questions are answered on this Gmail FAQ.
Q: What do I need to do on the day of my conversion?
A: You should remain logged out of your Stern accounts until the process is complete. This includes logging out of SternLife and Stern Gmail on your desktops, laptops, and mobile devices/phones.
Before the process begins, copy or save your Gmail signature. After merging, you may need to create a new Gmail signature.
Q: How do I know everything is working once the process is complete?
A: After the process is complete please go over this Checklist to ensure your account is working properly.
Q: Can I still use Zoom while I am logged out of my Stern account during the conversion time?
A: Yes, even though you should be logged out of all Stern services during this time, you are still able to use Zoom through your NYU account during this time. If the meeting is on your Stern calendar, please copy the Zoom meeting ID elsewhere so you have access to it while you are logged out of your Stern account.
Q: After the conversion, I am forwarding myself emails to my Stern alias but they are not showing up in my inbox anymore. Why?
A: If you are logged into your Stern NetID email account (ex. jd123@stern.nyu.edu) and you want to forward email to that account from within that same account, you must forward to the main Stern NetID account jd123@stern.nyu.edu, not to the alias. Gmail will not forward emails sent from an account to its own alias.
Q: How will this effect my NYU Home email account (ex. jd123@nyu.edu)?
A: This process has no current impact on your NYU email account.
Q: How can I download my Google data?
A: Please use these instructions to download your Google data.
Q: What will happen to Sternlife?
A: You will log in to Sternlife with your Stern NetID account and access all the content you had from both accounts.
8: We have departmental accounts that we use to communicate with different constituencies. How will these accounts be affected?
A: The use of shared accounts is technically a violation of NYU account policy ,even though Stern IT has traditionally been lenient when faced with requests for these types of accounts. We strongly recommend migrating off these accounts, and instead using Google Groups. We will work closely with any departments to design and validate new workflows prior to converting "real" shared accounts.
