NetID Conversion Project

Mission Statement

To improve digital security and provide seamless access to both NYU and Stern services, Stern IT in conjunction with NYU IT is converting all Stern usernames to NYU’s NetID format.

For example, Stern employee Jane Doe has a Stern account username ‘jdoe’, consisting of the first initial of her first name and up to the first seven letters of her last name. This Stern username (jdoe) will be converted to Jane Doe’s NetID format: ‘jd1234’. Jane will use 'jd1234' to log into Stern systems including SternLife, the Stern website, and her Stern Gmail account. jdoe@stern.nyu.edu will continue to function normally as an email alias. This project does not impact Jane's NYU Home email account jd1234@nyu.edu.

Why Is This Happening

  • To improve your experience by restoring seamless login (SSO) between Stern and NYU services.

  • To improve security by reducing the number of Stern systems which store user passwords.

Project Goal

This project is intended to accomplish the following goal:

  • Convert all Stern employee accounts to NYU NetID as the usernames.

Who Will Be Affected

  • All Stern employees (Faculty, Staff, Administrators) will be affected by this conversion.

  • If you have multiple Stern accounts, they will be consolidated to a single Stern NetID account.

  • All current Stern employees, students and alumni will be affected by the Single Sign-On change.

How Will This Impact Me?

  • You will have access to all of the same services as you do now but you will log in using your Stern NetID instead of your Stern username.

  • Your current Stern email address is not going away and will still be available for sending and receiving email.
