Tue. Sept. 5:
We will only have about 15 minutes together, just enough time to introduce ourselves and for me to show you where the restrooms are and where we go during a fire drill!
We don't have class tomorrow, but here is a link to Wednesday's schedule, FYI: https://tinyurl.com/1stRedDay2017
Thu. Sept. 7:
In class:
1. You will choose Spanish names and we will discuss class expectations.
2. I will show you a video about online translator use (which you will, of course, never do!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKxaxrxVMsg
3. We will play "pato" and, time permitting, another review game.
Homework due on Wed., Sept. 13: Turn in your signed expectations sheet and show me your 1/2 - 1" binder (or similarly-sized section of a larger binder) with paper, and your iPad with at least a 30% charge remaining (assuming that you've been issued an iPad!)
Mon., Sept. 11:
Starter:
1. Go to: https://conjuguemos.com/
2. Select "verbs" (under "Spanish" in the lower left quadrant.)
3. Click on #8, "present tense: all verbs."
4. Click on the blue "graded practice mode" bar.
5. Hit, "customize" in the upper right hand corner.
6. Choose: "one conjugation, verb in Spanish, don't show hints."
7. Select your verb blast verbs (dar & jugar aren't on their list for some reason) and "all pronouns, all tenses." VerbBlastPDF.pdf
8. Change the # of minutes to 10 (under "time me") and hit "start" in the upper left. , present tense, all verbs.
9. Keep going until you get at least 90% (the denominator has to be >=20!) Show me your score.
In class:
1. We will go over each of the verb blast verbs to make sure you know in which way(s) each is irregular. Take notes!
2. Info gap activity:
a. You and your partner each have "verb blast" sheets with missing conjugations.
b. Using your speaking and listening skills, help each other complete the sheets. For example, if you are missing the yo form of jugar, you would ask your partner, ¿Cuál es la forma "yo" del verbo "jugar"? Your partner will reply "juego" and you will write it in the appropriate spot on your sheet.
c. This is not show and tell! ;-) It is for speaking, listening, and conjugation practice. Do not look at each other's sheets until you have completed the activity.
4. On your own, create an account in quizlet (if you haven't already), then input the 'verb blast' infinitives and their definitions. Show me this when you're done.
5. Practice verb blast on your own time, the assessment is on Friday the 15th.
Wed., Sept. 13:
Starter: Conversational activity with the "verb blast" verbs:
https://tinyurl.com/ConversationVerbBlastVerbs
In class: While you're doing the starter, I will:

http://zachary-jones.com/zambombazo/infografia-usos-de-los-verbos-ser-y-estar/
Get started on the double homework that's due on Thu., Oct. 19. See the highlighted section, below.
Tue., Oct. 17:
In class:
1. We will complete and review any activities from last class that we did not finish. I will draw quadrants on the board so that we can see where your scores fall (for the two quia "pop" activities.)
2. We will write out DOCTOR and PLACE again and I will explain the use and formation of the present progressive (the A in PLACE), as some of you did not practice it last year.
3. I will explain the upcoming brief assessment - your illustrated study guide for ser & estar. This due on Thu., Oct. 19!
Brief assessment due Thu., Oct. 19:
Write your own mini, illustrated study guide to ser v. estar.
1. You must write two sentences each for DOCTOR and PLACE (22 sentences in all.)
Help on the "A"=action=>present progressive:
Sr. Jordan video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wakiBSiW6Is
Rocket Languages explanation: https://www.rocketlanguages.com/spanish/tenses/spanish-present-progressive-tense
2. Each sentence must be illustrated.
3. Make sure that you vary the forms of the verbs, for example, don't just use the yo form. You may use online images and you may use Book Creator or a similar app, but feel free to do it on paper or make an iMovie, etc., as long as you fulfill the requirements, above. You do not have to read the sentences aloud.
Thu., Oct. 19:
Starter:
Write eight ser/estar sentences using the adjective that connects each photo. If you finish early, do the same (but find your own pictures or draw them) for mal & verde. When you have finished, find a partner(s) with whom you have not worked lately, and explain to him/her/them, in English, why you chose ser v. estar?
In class:
1. While you are completing your starting and explaining your reasoning to a classmate, I will call you each up to conference about your ser/estar guide mini-assessment. You will hand these in or airdrop them to me.
2. We'll listen to this song by Jorge Drexler, an Uruguayan singer/songwriter, actor and, oddly, otolaryngologist (ear, nose & throat doctor.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7F_ToQtzcCo
3. Here are the lyrics:
Seroestar-JorgeDrexler-Tresmilmillonesdelatidos.pdf
Working with a partner, circle the forms of ser using one color and circle the forms of estar using another color. Write which category DOCTOR or PLACE you think each usage falls into. I'll project it and we'll discuss.
4. I know that ser v. estar can be tough, but have you ever thought about how confusing English can be? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAL9VD6Lz9Y
Mon., Oct. 23:
In general, Spanish II students are rustier on estar and its uses than ser. So, we will be reviewing our position/location and condition/emotion vocabulary as well as the present progressive tense.
1. We'll begin by learning/reviewing a rhyme to help us remember the locational prepositions.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYeqUetm6fY
2. Next, see how fast you can finish "match" with this vocabulary. Keep track of your best time.
https://quizlet.com/87434775/preposiciones-de-lugar-use-estar-flash-cards
3. I'll divide you into teams of 3-4. I'll ask, in Spanish, where something is and you'll tell me where it is relative to other things. Remember, there can be several right answers, for example, La mochila está detrás de la silla & La mochila está lejos de la puerta may both be true.
4. Ser v. estar can be tough, but have you ever thought about how confusing English can be? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAL9VD6Lz9Y
5. Time permitting, try this Quizlet diagram with Spanish-speaking countries and their capitals: https://quizlet.com/220070598/spanish-speaking-countries-and-capitals-diagram-diagram/

You may handwrite on both sides of a mini-index card (that I provide) any notes that you think will help you during the assessment. However, if you use the card, you are not eligible for makeup of this assessment.
If you finish the assessment early:

Homework, due on Wed., Oct. 19 (Fri., Oct. 21 for sophomores & juniors due to PSAT testing):
Write two questions for each of the six letters of our ser DOCTOR memory trick. That means 12 questions in all.
Vary the subject of each question, for example, don't just use tú, or Ud. or Uds.
For example, one of your D (for description) questions might be ¿Cómo es Michael Jordan? You are asking, How is Michael Jordan? Not, "How is he feeling/doing?" - that would be estar. You are asking for a description of him.
Do not answer your own questions.
You must handwrite or print out this assignment. Do not email it to me or share it with me via google docs.
Wed., Oct. 19 - PSAT testing for sophomores and juniors
9th graders - We will watch two "Señor Jordan" videos on descriptions with ser. Then you will have time to practice the quizlet vocabulary sets, Duolingo or read a book or magazine in Spanish.
Fri., Oct. 21:
Starter: I'll check your homework and then you'll exchange it as a starter.
In class:
1. We'll put a couple of the homework/starter question/answer pairs on the board to make sure that everyone is getting it.
2. You'll take this ser test: http://www.quia.com/quiz/1938507.html
It will help you know where to focus your studies.
3. We'll play the kahoot game with occupations, religions, and nationalities (the one that we began last class.)

2. Chores - What you have to do!
Now that you have practiced how to communicate about what you (and others) are going to do, you will learn how to communicate about what you (and others) have to do.
a. Here is a funny video to help you master those quehaceres (chores):
Ayúdame: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eJJF11bIxM&feature=fvw
In groups of two or three, listen to the song several times and write down the lyrics. We will have a team competition with this song!
b. Ayúdame parody: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7OflwkoK3Q
c. If you make an ¡Ayúdame! video you may earn extra points (depending on quality) on our upcoming test. However, I must be able to hear your voice, no lip syncing or voice modification, I want to know that you have learned the vocab. in the song and can pronounce it correctly! Here is a video a student made several years ago:

d. Quizlet live with the chore vocab. set.
Project: http://tinyurl.com/ProyectoMiCasaIdeal
Interpersonal and presentational communication.
Due date - Thu., Dec. 21.
The house must be at least as large as two sheets of paper together, so 11" x 17" is the minimum (if it's on paper.)
It may be smaller if it is 3-dimensional, as long as we can identify the rooms and everything in them.
Homework, due on Tue., Dec. 19:
1. Complete this email from Javier: http://tinyurl.com/VamosACubaJavier
2. Write an email to a friend or relative telling him or her about a vacation you are going to take, as Javier did;
a. Your email must contain a greeting and goodbye, as Javier's does.
b. You must use ir a + infinitive to tell what you are going to do and tener que + infinitive to tell what you have to do.
c. You must write at least six complete sentences in your best Spanish. Try to use the vocab in your brain (not the quizlet vocab sets or wordreference.com!) Trust in your own abilities and knowledge, talk around it (circumlocute) if you're not sure of the word!
d. Do not copy Javier's letter and, of course, do not use a translator!
You will hand this homework in, so handwrite it, or print it at home or in the library before class begins!
Tue., Dec. 19:
Starter: Deber + infinitive means should/must do. As in English, tener que (have to) can be just a bit stronger than deber (should/must.)
Write four compound sentences in your best Spanish. Use deber + infinitive for at least two. Tell us:
1. What you should/must do (deber + infinitive) or have to do (tener que + infinitive) and then say but (pero) and tell me what you are going to do (ir a + infinitive.)
Example: I should/have to grade projects, but I am going to ski.
In class:
1. You will turn in your homework (email similar to Javier's.)
2. From your starter you'll share one sentence each with four different classmates. You'll ask each other, ¿Qué tienes que hacer? or ¿Qué debes hacer? Your classmates will answer with one of their starter sentences. Have the person initial next to the sentence you shared with him/her.

5. We'll play quizlet live with the chore vocab.
6. Time permitting, we'll have two listening activities. (Dime 83-84.)

Remember to prepare questions to ask your classmates about their house, and be prepared to answer questions about yours.
Thu., Dec. 21:
Ideal House Projects!
We will do this "gallery walk" style:
1. Half of the students will be "showing off" their projects as they answer questions.
2. The other half will be asking the questions. We'll "let the wheel decide" , which interrogative (question word) must be used. Each student will rotate after asking 3-5 questions (3-4 minutes) per person. I will ask the occasional question, too.
3. After 25-30 minutes, students will switch roles.

Make an illustrated trifold in color regarding your likes and dislikes.
Use the example in this pdf Gustaractivity.pdf, except that you will have three columns, each divided in half. Follow the guidelines below!

1. Me gusta;
2. No me gusta;
3. Me interesa;
4. No me interesa;
5. Me encanta;
6. No me importa.
