Wed., Sept. 7:
We'll review the class expectations and do a "getting to know you" activity. You will also choose the name you'd like to use in Spanish class.
Homework due on Tue., Sept. 13: Show me your signed expectations sheet, binder with paper and your charged iPad.
Fri., Sept. 9:
Starter: Go to conjuguemos.com. Select Spanish verbs, present tense, all verbs. Highlight all of the ones that are on your verb blast list. Time yourself in 5 minute segments. Keep going until you get at least 90% (the denominator has to be >=20!)
In class: While you're doing the starter, I will:
1. Collect any class signed class expectations sheets and check any binders that you have (not due until Tue., but if you have them, let's get it out of the way.)
2. We will go over each of the verb blast verbs to make sure you know in which way(s) each is irregular.
3. "Info gap activity." You and your partner each have "verb blast" sheets with missing conjugations. Using your speaking and listening skills, help each other complete the sheets. For example, if you are missing the yo form of jugar, you would ask your partner, ¿Cuál es la forma "yo" del verbo "jugar"? Your partner will reply "juego" and you will write it in the appropriate spot on your sheet. This is not show and tell! Do not look at each others sheets.
4. On your own, create an account in quizlet (if you haven't already), then input the 'verb blast' infinitives and their definitions. Show me this when you're done.
Practice verb blast on your own time, the exam's in two classes.
Tue., Sept. 13:
Starter: Verb blast pair activity.
I'll check the homework that is due today: signed expectations sheet, binder with paper and charged iPad.
In class: Team conjugation races. Any questions on the verb blast exam?
VERB BLAST TEST NEXT CLASS (THURSDAY)!
Thu., Sept. 15:
Your first test - verb blast! VerbBlastPDF.pdf. Study! You will have a few minutes to review on Thu., then you will have the block to take the test, I'll correct it, you'll review your errors, turn that version back in to me, and re-take the test. As soon as you get a 100, you're done! Anyone who has not earned a 100 will have to return before or after school, or during workshop, to re-take it until he/she earns a 100. You must get a 100 on this by progress report time or it will be a zero! (Let's not start the year off that way, study for it now!)
Mon., Sept. 19 - Basic Spanish I review:
Basic vocabulary review
First semester of Spanish, Spanish love song ;-)
Review with games (with audio) You need Java to play these games, so they don't work on the iPads, but you can practice them on a laptop or perhaps your phone.

Homework, due on Wed., Sept. 21:
Practice the above five quizlet sets: (1) colors, (2) calendar, (3) things in the classroom, (4) high frequency -ar verbs, and (5) high frequency -er-ir verbs. Then, test yourself in quizlet on each set. Before generating the test, turn off true false. Make sure that each test contains all of the vocab. in that set, except for "cosas en la clase", for which you can test yourself on just 20. Take a screen shot of each of your five "tests."
Wed., Sept. 21 - Basic Spanish I review (continued)
Starter: Vocab. handout from quizlet, similar to homework practice.
In class:
1. Show me the screen shots of your homework.
2. Create at least three original sentences, each using at least four of the review words from the word bank on the board. This is similar to one of the activities that will be on Friday's exam. (Remember, "verb blast" verbs may be on the exam, too.)
3. Time permitting, we'll play matamoscas (flyswatter) with the vocab. that you found most challenging on the homework.
Fri., Sept. 23. - Review exam - Numbers, colors, calendar, things in the classroom & regular verbs conjugation
Tue., Sept. 27:
New unit - theme - Nature or condition? Ser & estar review.
SER:
ESTAR:
Starter:
In class:
1. We'll brainstorm what we already know about ser v. estar.
2. Then you'll complete these activities to "refresh" your ser v. estar knowledge:
Ser & estar review:
https://www.quia.com/cb/102539.html?AP_rand=1941945925&playHTML=1 (just do the ser/estar row)
http://www.quia.com/pop/47441.html
http://www.quia.com/pop/359412.html
http://www.quia.com/cz/12138.html
3. Now we'll have a couple of minutes to review your starter. Would you change any of your answers? Let's review them.
4. Maybe you're more of a visual learner, does this help?
http://zachary-jones.com/zambombazo/infografia-usos-de-los-verbos-ser-y-estar/
Get started on the double homework that's due Mon. See the highlighted section, below.
Thu., Sept. 29:
Starter:
Write eight ser/estar sentences using the adjective that connects each photo. Can you explain to me, in English, why you chose ser v. estar?
In class:
1. We'll listen to this song by Jorge Drexler, an Uruguayan singer/songwriter, actor and, oddly, otolaryngologist (ear, nose & throat doctor.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7F_ToQtzcCo
2. Here are the lyrics:
Seroestar-JorgeDrexler-Tresmilmillonesdelatidos.pdf
Working with a partner, circle the forms of ser using one color and circle the forms of estar using another color. Write which category DOCTOR or PLACE you think each usage falls into. I'll project it and we'll discuss.
DOUBLE Homework due Mon., Oct. 3:
Write your own mini, illustrated study guide to ser v. estar.
1. You must write two sentences each for DOCTOR and PLACE (22 sentences in all.)
2. Each sentence must be illustrated.
3. Make sure that you vary the forms of the verbs, for example, don't just use the yo form. You may use online images and you may use Book Creator or a similar app, but feel free to do it on paper or make an iMovie, etc., as long as you fulfill the requirements, above. You do not have to read the sentences aloud.
Mon., Oct. 3:
In general, Spanish II students are rustier on estar and its uses than ser. So, we will be reviewing our position/location and condition/emotion vocabulary as well as the present progressive tense.
1. Depending on how well airdrop is working, I may ask you to airdrop your homework, or I may just check it during the block.
2. We'll begin by learning/reviewing a rhyme to help us remember the locational prepositions.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYeqUetm6fY
3. Next, as a belated starter, see how fast you can finish "match" with this vocabulary (take a screen shot and put it in your starter/para empezar folder/album):
https://quizlet.com/87434775/preposiciones-de-lugar-use-estar-flash-cards
4. You'll describe where certain people and things in the class are relative to others. Remember, there is often more than one right answer, for example, La mochila está detrás de la silla & La mochila está lejos de la puerta may both be true.
5. We'll finish up with the present progressive. Let's watch this video and see if you can explain the present progressive to me afterward: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4LhR6fPdYM
Didn't quite catch it? How about this one?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmXsA2sZgVI
Homework, due Wed., Oct. 5, is to study the three "Locations" quizlet study sets, below (city, house & school.) There will be a mini-quiz on Wed., it will count as a homework grade.
Wed., Oct.. 5:
1. You'll take a mini-quiz on the three "Locations" quizlet sets, below (city, house & school.) As stated above, this will count as a homework grade.
2. Based on how that goes, we'll spend the rest of the block reviewing that vocab. or reinforcing the uses of estar: PLACE - position/location, action (present progressive) and condition/emotion vocabulary.
3. Time permitting, We will have a quick review of conditions/emotions.
Tue., Oct. 11:
Starter:
Complete this "conversation grid." https://docs.google.com/document/d/1tyoBF7aeJk9N17wTrOHzGRTqUHB5UR1fS3MrPj2jl9Q/edit?usp=sharing
In class:
1. We will continue our practice of using estar with position/locations (the "P" and "L" of our PLACE memory trick for estar.)
2. You will play scatter (puntos!), and then we will play quizlet live, with the conditions/emotions study set, below.
3. 8:15 - Take this practice test. The main part of Thursday's exam is in this format. http://www.quia.com/quiz/3928391.html
THU., OCT., 13 - EXAM ON ESTAR & ITS USES
At this point, it should be safe to assume that you know how to conjugate estar correctly. Here are the quizlet sets for the vocabulary you'll need for this test.
Conditions/emotions: https://quizlet.com/87434589/condicionesemociones-use-estar-flash-cards/

Locations in a school: https://quizlet.com/87434232/en-la-escuela-use-estar-flash-cards/
Since there is quite a bit of vocabulary in this unit, and not all of it is review for everyone, you will be allowed a "crib sheet." You may handwrite on one side of a 3"x5" index card any notes that you think will help you.
(I have taken the house vocab. out of this unit. It will be reviewed in the family & food review unit in the 2nd quarter.
https://quizlet.com/87434402/en-casa-use-estar-flash-cards/)
Mon., Oct. 17:
Starter: Describe yourself (internal and external characteristics, occupation, origin, religion; in relationship to others, etc.) Write at least five sentences, use ser!
In class:
1. We'll have some conversation practice using your starter.
2. We'll also have a quick time/date review.
http://spanish4teachers.org/files/Worksheet_la_hora_telling_time_in_Spanish.pdf
3. Since not everyone was taught religions and occupations, we'll review the handout on them, above. Then we will play quizlet live with the occupations vocab. (as the religions are all cognates.)
4. Go to kahoot.it and wait for me to give you the PIN. We'll play a game with the occupations, religions, and nationalities vocab. Since we only had a few minutes for this on Mon., we will re-start the game on Wed.
THIS WEEK - EVERY TIME YOU HAVE A FEW SPARE MINUTES, AND EVERY DAY THAT YOU DON'T HAVE WRITTEN HOMEWORK DUE, I EXPECT YOU TO PRACTICE THE QUIZLET STUDY SETS, BELOW.

Homework, due on Wed., Oct. 19 (Fri., Oct. 21 for sophomores & juniors due to PSAT testing):
Write two questions for each of the six letters of our ser DOCTOR memory trick. That means 12 questions in all.
Vary the subject of each question, for example, don't just use tú, or Ud. or Uds.
For example, one of your D (for description) questions might be ¿Cómo es Michael Jordan? You are asking, How is Michael Jordan? Not, "How is he feeling/doing?" - that would be estar. You are asking for a description of him.
Do not answer your own questions.
You must handwrite or print out this assignment. Do not email it to me or share it with me via google docs.
Wed., Oct. 19 - PSAT testing for sophomores and juniors
9th graders - We will watch two "Señor Jordan" videos on descriptions with ser. Then you will have time to practice the quizlet vocabulary sets, Duolingo or read a book or magazine in Spanish.
Fri., Oct. 21:
Starter: I'll check your homework and then you'll exchange it as a starter.
In class:
1. We'll put a couple of the homework/starter question/answer pairs on the board to make sure that everyone is getting it.
2. You'll take this ser test: http://www.quia.com/quiz/1938507.html
It will help you know where to focus your studies.
3. We'll play the kahoot game with occupations, religions, and nationalities (the one that we began last class.)
3. Time permitting, we will play flyswatter with some of the vocabulary often associated with ser (descriptions, occupations, time/date, origin, relationships.)

(Yes, this is a lot of vocab! However, quite a bit of it is review, and you will be allowed to have a half-index card chuleta (crib sheet) for the written exam.)
Homework - continue to work on your project! It is due on Tue. (next class)!
Remember to prepare questions to ask your classmates about their house, and be prepared to answer questions about yours.
Tue., Dec. 6:
Ideal House Projects!
(This should take approx. half of the block.)
Belated starter:
http://tinyurl.com/LimonYSal-IrA-Infinitivo
Time permitting, you will have class time to begin homework, due on Thu., Dec. 8:
1. Complete this email from Javier: http://tinyurl.com/VamosACubaJavier
2. Write an email to a friend or relative telling him or her about a vacation you are going to take, as Javier did (though with Fidel Castro's recent death, Cuba might not be the best destination right now ;-)
a. Your email must contain a greeting and goodbye, as Javier's does.
b. You must use ir a + infinitive to tell what you are going to do.
c. You must write at least five complete sentences in your best Spanish. Try to use the vocab in your brain (not the quizlet vocab sets or wordreference.com!) Trust in your own abilities and knowledge!
d. Do not copy Javier's letter and, of course, do not use a translator!
You will hand this homework in, so handwrite it or print it at home or in the library before class begins!
Thu., Dec. 8:
1. I will collect your homework. Then we'll begin to learn about expressing obligations and chores.
2. CHORES - WHAT "YA GOTTA DO!"
Now that you have practiced how to communicate about what you (and others) are going to do, you will learn how to communicate about what you (and others) have to do. Here is a funny video to help you master those quehaceres (chores):
Ayúdame: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eJJF11bIxM&feature=fvw
In groups of two or three, listen to the song several times and write down the lyrics. We will have a team competition with this song!
Ayúdame parody: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7OflwkoK3Q
If you make an ¡Ayúdame! video you may earn up to 5 points (depending on quality) on our upcoming test. However, I must be able to hear your voice, no lip syncing or voice modification, I want to know that you have learned the vocab. in the song! Here is a video a student made several years ago:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uB1CtKNB20k
3. Practice your chores vocab:

4. Take your time and read this thoroughly, read it more than once if necessary and take notes! It's a very good explanation:
http://www.drlemon.com/Grammar/Gustar.html
5. Now you should have excellent notes on gustar and other 'backwards' verbs. Time to practice with the links below. I'll circulate around the room.
You will probably make a few errors, that is part of learning! However, let me know if you can't figure out why your answer is wrong.

Put this pdf in Notability
http://tinyurl.com/Pr-cticaBackwardsVerbs
Follow the example to help you write appropriate questions and answers.
In class:
1. Mingle! Everyone will be on their feet in the center (with iPads.) You will ask and answer the questions from the starter. Then volunteers will write their questions/answers on the board, so that everyone can check his/hers.
2. Make an illustrated trifold in color regarding your likes and dislikes.
Use the example in this pdf Gustaractivity.pdf, except that you will have three columns, each divided in half. That will yield six sections. Label the six sections:
"Me gusta," "No me gusta," "Me interesa," "No me interesa," "Me encanta" & "No me importa."
a. Have at least three different things/activities in each column, 18 different things/activities in all!
b. You may draw the things/activities, cut them out of magazines (I have lots of magazines for your use) or use free clip art (this means no watermarks.)
c. You must do this on paper (the minimum size is legal, 8.5" x 14".) You may tape two or three pieces of paper together to make a larger trifold. I have plenty of colored paper in my room.
d. These are your likes, dislikes, etc. If you don't know the vocab. for them, be sure to write them on the back (in English and Spanish) or you'll have a hard time conversing about them on Wed.!
e. This will count as a double homework, due Wed., Jan. 11.
3. If you finish the trifold in class, do this activity: http://www.quia.com/quiz/4960922.html You can use this as an extra starter (you may also do this just to have an extra starter.)
Wed., Jan. 11:
Starter:
Take a screen shot once you've become a millionaire http://www.quia.com/rr/92306.html?AP_rand=1607007599&playHTML=1
Meanwhile... I'll check your "Me gusta..." trifolds.
In class:
1. Conversation using your trifold as a foundation. I will listen in and give you simple check, check minus/plus score, which will count for 20% of the grade on this assignment.
2. You have two chances to take this practice quiz, Quia will automatically send me both of your scores and I will put the better of the two in gradebook. If you don't have time to take it a second time in class, you may do it on your own anytime this week. The quiz will expire at 3:00 on Friday.
This will count as graded classwork, so work on your own, but you may use your notes:
Encantar y gustar - Actividad de la clase
http://www.quia.com/quiz/4960922.html
Fri., Jan. 13:
Starter:
http://www.indiana.edu/~call/ejercicios/prac_gustar01.htm
As you receive feedback from the site, we will not review these in class.
In class:
1. Complete this activity with querer (to want things/to love people & pets) and poder (to be able to/can):
http://tinyurl.com/PracPoderQuerer
We will review these on the board.
2. Write four original sentences. Use querer (e->ie) & poder (o->ue) + infinitivo in each. Remember, these are stem-changing (boot) verbs!
Example: I want to go to the movies but I can't find money. Quiero ir al cine pero no puedo encontrar dinero.
When you have finished, line up facing each other and take turns asking and answering, ¿Qué quieres?
3. We'll split up into teams and collaboratively write a story using gustar, encantar, aburrir ("backwards" verbs) & poder, querer and a random selection of chores/pastimes (courtesy of quizlet.)
4. Time permitting, we'll listen to a song and complete the related activity with gustar. Refer to the grid of nine women and write which ones are mentioned in the song. I'll play it on the white board while you listen and write. http://spanishvocabularytest.blogspot.com/2015/11/spanish-vocabulary-test-el-verbo-gustar.html
What is he saying? Does he like all of these women, or do they all like him?
EXAM ON WED., JAN 18

"Backwards" verbs: gustar, encantar, interesar, importar, aburrir &
