The purpose of the initial round of pilots was to explore the following questions.
Liaisons were appointed for each pilot project, and projects were designed according to the ePortfolio Pilot Design Questions document. In May of 2015, the Task Force made its recommendations (see the Task Force Report Summary), along with the detailed report. As recommended, a second round of pilots was held for AY 2015-16 as described below.
EMDA 299 was offered to the second cohort of the Innovation and Leadership Program which began in August, 2015, with Bobby Arellano serving as the faculty lead and Vicki Suter representing the Task Force. The class used WordPress ePortfolio themes Illustratr, Sketch and Espied to evaluate their suitability as institutional ePortfolio themes. For more information on this pilot and to view students ePortfolios, see the EMDA 299 Digital Portfolio class page.
Vicki worked with Danielle Mancuso and Max Brooks on a pilot exploring whether student employee use of ePortfolios can help them apply critical reflection skills in rethinking the value of learning from their experiences, making connections across their entire experience across the University, and gauging their progress (in the variety of roles they may play as students, student employees, interns, leaders) as well as their development of "soft skills" and other transferable skills valued by employers.
The Masters in Mental Health Counseling program switched from the iWebFolio platform to Google sites for student portfolios. The program uses ePortfolios to satisfy the needs of external accreditors. The program template features a filing cabinet page preloaded with directories for each learning outcome so that students can upload specific assignments designated by the faculty. To enable the program to maintain access to these materials after the students' accounts expire following graduation, all of the students have been required to make the program's Google account (mhc@sou.edu) an owner of their site, thus ensuring that access to the sites and student work will continue after the students leave the University.
A Google site template has been developed for the University Studies pilot(s).
Beginning with EMDA 299 (Digital Portfolios) taught by Erik Palmer in Winter 2015, students in the Innovation and Leadership Program have developed individual ePortfolios showcasing their work. The class used Tumblr as its ePortfolio tool, enabling the Task Force to evaluate it as a potential ePortfolio application. Vicki Suter was the Task Force liaison on this pilot. See a gallery of ePortfolios for the Winter 2015 Cohort. See also, Digital Portfolios @ SOU, a presentation made by Erik and Vicki at the 2015 Ed Tech Summit.
Students in Jennifer Longshore's Art History class created ePortfolios using WordPress. Vicki was the Task Force liaison on this pilot.
Skeptic House students continue to explored the use of ePortfolios using an SOU installation of WordPress while creating an online magazine, Rational Consensus. John Taylor, captain for the Skeptic House, served as the lead on this project, and Vicki was the Task Force liaison. (See Skeptic House portfolio project page.)
MindBody House implemented the use of ePortfolios using Google sites Spring term 2015. Hart Wilson was the Task Force liaison working with Jamie Vener and Craig Stillwell. In addition to having students reflect on their learning (increased ability to identify credible sources was cited by many as a win for the term), Craig and Jamie also asked them to present their sites to the class for public speaking practice. We created this showcase of their sites (each site opens to the reflections page for assessment purposes).
Work continued with Mark Shibley and his Capstone classes in Google sites. Hart Wilson was the Task Force liaison for these pilots.
Music majors are using Google Sites to showcase their accomplishments and build professional portfolios of their work at SOU. Hart Wilson has worked with Vicki Purslow on this pilot.
After a pilot run in the spring of 2015, Hart Wilson has continued to work with Susan Faller-Mitchell and Younghee Kim in implementing the use of ePortfolios in the ECD Capstone courses using Google sites. Students in the online course had almost no difficulty in creating their ePortfolios in the spring of 2015.
