Spanish 3

The Spanish III course for high school is a college level intermediate Spanish course. This third-year curriculum reviews and expands on the material taught in Spanish 1 and 2. In addition to a communicative view of language learning through authentic speaking and listening task, we also take the view of learning based on reading authentic text from Year One and Two, students will be introduced to Chicana literature by reading a level appropriate edition of La Casa en Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros and other level appropriate works in Spanish. Use of a story will ground the students in the practice of recognizing and using more complex grammatical structures. The textbook, Interacciones, provides a structured but varied approach to language learning while the literature and reading reinforce the concepts being learned.

The course uses a practical approach, where the student learns to perform more communication and conversational skills in a variety of every day settings. During the practicing of these skills, the curriculum also covers more complex grammatical structures. Additionally, an emphasis on culture has been given through several special features such literary works, personal experiences and exploration, realia, and videos. Technology is primarily integrated in several ways, first through the enhanced textbook and tutorials and secondly by projects and presentations about the book La casa en Mango Street as students read through Sandra Cisnero’s collection of vignettes. The curriculum also focuses on building a vocabulary for sharing Biblical truth in Spanish. This is given so the students will be encouraged to use the Spanish language in Christian service.
