Course Goals and Objectives

Course Goals

    1. Developing an awareness of the form and function of the Spanish language.

    2. Developing basic writing and oral skills in this language.

    3. Connecting with other disciplines through the Spanish language

    4. Recognizing distinctive perspectives that are specifically viewed through the Spanish language and its various cultures.

    5. Developing insight into the nature of language and culture.

    6. Producing written and spoken communication such as short notes, messages, stories or reports about people and things in their environment using a variety of media, including print and digital tools.

    7. Identifying main ideas in developmentally appropriate oral/visual narratives based on familiar themes and highly predictable context with visual of graphic support.

    8. Demonstrating comprehension of content from authentic audio and visual resources.

Course Objectives

By the end of the year the student will be able to use Spanish to:

    1. Meet basic courtesy requirements in Spanish, such as greetings and leave-taking, questions, and giving name and age.

    2. Perform certain functions with the Spanish language such as:

        • Ordering a meal

        • Making purchases

        • Following directions

        • Making small talk on a variety of subjects (family, church, school, sports, travel, food, doctor visit, etc.)

        • Describe and relate events in the present tense.

        • Describe and relate events in the preterit (simple past) tense.

        • Express future time.

        • Have a notion of gender, number, and subject/verb agreement.

    1. Give simple greetings and leave-takings.

    2. Ask and answer simple questions in Spanish.

    3. Use numbers in everyday contexts.

    4. Give and follow directions in Spanish.

    5. Make purchases.

    6. Narrate and describe in the present tense in Spanish.

    7. Relate past events.

    8. Relate future plans.

    9. Express simple opinions.

    10. Discuss similarities and differences between North American and Hispanic cultures.

    11. Tell the gospel message/ personal testimony.

    12. Comprehend the principle message contained in the various media using familiar contextual formats, prior knowledge, logical inferences and connections with other subject areas.

    13. Have an intermediate-low to intermediate-mid level of proficiency as established by National and the Tennessee Standards for Foreign Language Learning.
