Michael J. Strauss became a scholar of international relations and international law after a previous career in journalism. He specializes in territorial control and human rights, and his research about leases of territory by states caused one publication to describe him as “one of the foremost authorities on a neglected area of international law.” He is the author of three books – The Leasing of Guantanamo Bay (Praeger, 2009), The Viability of Territorial Leases in Resolving International Sovereignty Disputes (L’Harmattan, 2010), and Territorial Leasing in Diplomacy and International Law (Brill/Nijhoff, 2015). Professor Strauss teaches international relations at the Centre d’Etudes Diplomatiques et Stratégiques in Paris, France, where he earned his Ph.D. He also teaches international law at the Université de Paris 5 (Paris Descartes University).
