7th and 8th Honors
Spanish Classroom Expectations
¡Bienvenidos a la clase de español!
It is great that you are in my Honors Spanish class and I look forward to a productive year together. We will be learning more of the building blocks of the Spanish language including speaking, listening, reading, and writing. To make sure that we all do our best and have an environment conducive to learning, I ask that you follow the guidelines listed below.
Remember, this is an advanced-level Spanish class that will better prepare middle school students for high school Spanish. Honors Spanish will cover more material at a faster pace and allow for more depth for the topics taught in the units. Come to class with an open mind, and be prepared to learn knowing that mistakes are part of the learning process.
As a student, your expectations are to:
1. Attend class and have good attendance. If you miss class, you must contact me and check Google Classroom for any assignments. If there is no work in Google Classroom you may touch base with me to see what we did in class. It is your responsibility to complete the assigned tasks. Handbook policy will be followed with the expectation that the following class will be the day that the missing quiz, test, or assignment is due.
2. Arrive on time, get situated in your assigned seat, and have homework and supplies ready. If you are tardy you will lose a participation point. Use your time in the morning to prepare or gather the supplies that you will need for Spanish class as you are packing for your day.
3. Tests and quizzes are planned in advance and should be marked in your Student Planner so you can break down the preparation to review the necessary material. Spending time before the eve of the test to study will help you to retain the information better so you are successful in your evaluation. More information is given to help you learn how to prepare.
4. PARTICIPATE! This is the type of class where hands-on learning and having an open mind are critical to success. It is important to learn as well as part of your grade.
5. Speaking clearly is part of the language lesson and snack time is not during Spanish class. Eating in class should not be happening since it will interfere with your ability to pronounce the words correctly.
6. Technology use in Spanish class is for you to work on the specific assignment that is part of the Spanish class lesson. Misuse of technology is a mark on your Choice Card. Cell phones are not allowed in Spanish class unless permission is given in class to use them for specific class assignments. School Handbook policy will be followed. If there are cell phones in class they will be taken by the teacher to the principal's office.
7. Use class time wisely. You are expected to be ready to work at the start of class. If you find yourself with extra time, you should find a way to practice/study your Spanish. The teacher will dismiss you when you have listened to the instructions regarding papers to turn in or what is needed for the next class. Do not dismiss yourself, you will be holding up the rest of the class and lose a participation point.
8. Do your own work. You need to demonstrate your abilities, not those of the students around you. Know the difference between helping/coaching and copying. You are expected to help those around you to understand. Having them copy and not understand will not help their learning.
9. Be a positive, respectful, engaged learner in the classroom, and most importantly, HAVE FUN!
Exams and tests:
It is very important to study and do your best when we have a test or quiz, as these show what you know. Tests and quizzes can not be retaken, but corrections will be made with explanations after and you will know where the mistake was.
How to study:
Review and reinforce what you have learned in class DAILY.
Do not wait until the night before the test to study for the test.
If you have any questions, you can come to me to clarify them, (let me know to coordinate the time and day).
Participation: I use a participation point system in which students can earn or lose points. Students earn points by being called on and answering out loud. Students who are not following expectations lose points, and are encouraged to earn them back. Scores will be for each class and recorded in PowerSchool.
Grading:
Grades will be broken down into the following categories:
Test
Quiz
Homework
Classwork
Participation
Materials needed in class:
Pencil
RED pen for corrections
Three-ring binder (1” size or larger works best)
textbook
Notebook
