Atmospheric perspective: how the atmosphere influences how distant objects appear. The further away an object, the less clear they are, and the more they take on the value and hue of the background. Artists use this technique to create the illusion of depth and distance in a painting by tinting (adding white), toning (adding gray), shading (adding black). The darker objects will appear closer to the viewer, the lighter objects will appear farther away.
