To begin, we want you to explore one aspect of identity. This will be your theme.
This could include:
Race, culture, or heritage
Gender or self-expression
Emotions or inner thoughts
How others see you vs. how you see yourself
Write down 3–5 words or phrases that describe your theme.
Needed Materials:
Clothing template
Magazines, newspapers, printed images
Scissors
Glue
Cardstock or mixed-media paper
Markers, colored pencils, or paint
Found materials (fabric scraps, textured paper, etc.)
Find and cut out different patterns, textures, colors
Use the clothing templates as a guide, carefully cut out each shape from your selected pattern, texture, or color.
Find and cut out:
Faces or facial features (eyes, lips, noses)
Body parts
Cut apart different facial features
Mix and match features from different people
Experiment with scale (e.g., oversized eyes, small mouth)
Tip: look for a variety of skin tones, scales, and perspectives.
On your paper:
Arrange pieces before gluing
Overlap and layer images
Combine realism with abstraction
Consider balance, contrast, and focal point (Ask yourself: What draws the viewer’s attention first
Contrast different textures, tones, or expressions
Glue down your final composition
Enhance details (outlines, shading, background) by adding drawn or painted elements.
(optional) Incorporate text (words, headlines, phrases) into your piece
Record your theme and name on the back and turn in!
Create a new doc
8 x 10 in, 300 ppi
Collect images and place them in a folder
Clothing (look at the outline)
Body parts, faces or facial features
Textures, patterns, colors
Drag in your clothing item, and remove background by using object selection tool and then copy on to a new layer command/ctrl j
Grab a patterned image and place over your clothing item, then using the object selection tool select the outline of your clothing on the patterned layer, mask!
Another option: You can also select the clothing item then select the paint brush tool and paint in a color!
Repeat with next clothing items and patterned images
Play with different colors, patterns, and blending modes!
When selecting different facial features, use the marquee tool
6. Create more layers and play with different blending modes
Make sure to label your layers.
7. Place together all the different parts, playing with scale! Save a copy .jpg and submit your final piece on Canvas!
