For your final project, you will create a photo essay that documents “A Day in the Life” of a chosen person or place. This is not LITERALLY a day in the life, as you will need to go take photos and interview your subject several times over several days. Your goal is to visually tell a real story that shows routines, interactions, emotions, and the environment that shapes your subject’s daily life generally speaking. You will use interviews, multiple photo sessions, and thoughtful editing to build your narrative.
Capture authentic moments
Include a variety of shot types (wide, medium, detail, candid, portrait)
Show the subject in context
Communicate something meaningful about their life
Use visuals to create a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end
Make sure you choose a subject that you CAN follow around over several days. If you can't, then choose another subject...
INTRO: Writing to introduce the story and give any important background context and greater meaning (1-2 paragraphs is ample). See optional outline below:
Paragraph 1: Introduce the person or place, give essential background, and describe what their daily life generally looks like. Provide context about who they are, where the story takes place, and what makes their routine or environment noteworthy.
Paragraph 2: Explain the larger idea or theme revealed through their “day in the life.” Highlight what the photo essay uncovers about their character, responsibilities, relationships, or environment. Clarify what the audience should notice or understand as they view the images.
***NO first person pronouns (I, me, my) , using a journalistic tone by focusing on the subject.
Write in third person (he, she, they, the subject, the community, the location), keep the tone factual, descriptive, and objective... similar to a news or magazine feature. Example: Every morning before sunrise, Mr. Alvarez begins his day in the school greenhouse, tending to the plants that feed the culinary program.
VISUAL VARIETY: Establishing shot, wide shot, medium shot, detail shot, environmental portrait
6-10 IMAGES WITH CAPTIONS that cover the 5 W's and H
At least ONE QUOTE from your subject
Your project will be submitted in a presentation format (InDesign, Canva, or Google Slides), and presented to the class on the day of the final.
When presenting to the class, you will need to explain a bit, what your images reveal about your subject and analyze your photos based on the visual elements for strong photojournalism (content, position/perspective, timing, expression/gesture, composition, light)
Complete planning questions and an interview
Participate in class critiques
Submit work-in-progress photos on Canvas
Reflect on your progress
Respond/critique to classmates’ photos
