Videoconferencing: Collaborating and Connecting Around the World

An increase in bandwidth and accessibility globally has led to awesome opportunities to collaborate and connect via videoconferencing with experts and classrooms everywhere.

My advice:

Grades 6-12: Let students research and find experts to contact. Have the students compose email letters asking experts to connect with your classroom. You forward the emails and organize an appropriate time. Many experts will not respond, but some will, and it is an empowering opportunity for students.

Grades K-5: Check out Mystery Skype, and Skype in the Classroom. Mystery Skype is awesome geography lesson where your students and another classroom Skype together and try to guess each other's location through yes and no questions. For example, is your state adjacent to a Great Lake?

Skype in the Classroom is free videoconferencing with experts. Additionally, it is a forum to connect with other classrooms across the world.
