Expectations

We, as coaches at Canyon Crest Academy, wish to welcome you to our Cross Country program. We view this team as an extended family and hope that your participation will be both rewarding and life changing.

Success in running does not come easy. We hope that the information provided here will enable you to set and achieve realistic and meaningful goals throughout your high school running career.

As a member of the Canyon Crest Academy XC team, you represent not only yourself, but every previous and upcoming runner in the program. You should be proud of your choice and should help maintain the high level of commitment that brings this success. Remember that your attitude and conduct represents your school, teammates, coaches, and family. Inappropriate conduct may result in disciplinary action which can include dismissal from practice, forfeiture of races, and ultimately dismissal from the team. Your team captains are held to a high standard and should be considered an extension of the coaching staff.

We expect each member of our team to be committed to the team and team ideals.

Attendance Policy

All athletes are expected to be at every practice.  Practices are typically M-F; 3:45 to 5:30 PM.

Varsity practices may go later in afternoon and consistent of additional strength work to be done on their own.

Team practice times may vary throughout the season to accommodate weather and other situations.

All absences must be cleared by personal parent contact.  If the athlete is at school during the day a parent email or phone call is needed the same day of absence.  If this procedure is not followed that athlete can be suspended form a single meet.

If a student knows they will not be at practice, communication from the parent before practice to confirm they will not be there is needed.  As long as a parent notifies the head coach of an absence, it is excused.  This can be done by

In either of these methods, parent email must be on the communication.  If a student emails the head coach regarding a missed practice, including a parent's email is acceptable form of communication.

Consistency is the key to proper training and successful running.  It has been scientifically shown that the largest factor in a student athlete's success in cross country is the number of practices they attend.

All athletes are expected to be at practice, every practice - but understand there are other things going on.  Missed practices must be communicated.

An uncommunicated absence may forfeit an upcoming trip, race, or team activity.   3 or more uncommunicated absences may result from dismissal from team.

Illness/ Injuries

If you are ill and must miss a practice or an XC meet, please have your parents contact the coaching staff prior to that absence. If you feel that you are injured, notify a coach immediately.  We have an athletic trainer at CCA that is highly knowledgeable and works with our coaching staff to help athletes recover and get stronger.  After talking to the coaching staff, this is the appropriate next step.

Never attempt to hide an injury from the coaching staff. This could endanger your health and, secondarily, your season.

Weather

Weather may result in practice times changing to allow for safer training conditions.  If a student-athlete is unable to make the change in time, please communicate as soon as possible.

Extra-curricular Activities

While we realize that XC may not be your only extra-curricular activity, we ask that you do not take unnecessary risks and show your commitment and dedication to the team. We take our sport seriously and expect you to make XC your priority sport during the season.

Travel/ Trips

The coaching staff works hard to reward the student athletes with possible travel and trips during the season.  These are contingent on the team being invited to possible invitationals.  Possible examples for this might include:
