Composition & Production

Overview and Student Work

This video features and introduction to the course by our students, as well as some of our featured compositions.

Course Overview

NEW for the 2018-19 academic year, the Composition & Production (formerly Composition & Technology) course is open to students in grades 10-12, with the possibility of repeating for additional credit.

Throughout the course students will learn the fundamentals of working with sound in a digital environment. Using GarageBand at the core of the course, students are introduced to DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations), which enable the user to create and record sounds and continue to work with recorded material in post-production mixing and mastering.

The course revolves around three main components: working with and manipulating musical ideas in a digital environment, designing and altering digital and analogue sound sources, and mixing and mastering multi-track recordings. By the end of the course, students will choose to focus on one or more of the following areas: music composition, sampling and mixing existing content, and fine tuning of multi-track sound sources.

This is a bring-your-own-device course, where students will be required to bring a laptop or tablet to class preferebly with GarageBand, or other equivalent music production software installed. This course is offered for students in Grades 10-12.
