Aspen Log in (For Mobile Users) https://aspen.southcolonieschools.org/aspen/logon.do?mobile=1
This should be the same log in that students use to access our school network.Parents: You can also set up a "family" account to view the grades of every child in your household. Parents, if you have difficulty setting up your own account, PLEASE ask your child to share this with you so that you can access his/her grades. In most cases, the student's ID number is his/her user name and the password has been selected by the student.
For students that have forgotten their South Colonie Password: You will need to ask Ms. Detrick to reset it. It will be reset to the secondary password that is used for accounts such as I-Ready. If your student number begins with a zero, enter it without the first zero. Example: 0978478 is entered as 978478.

FAQs
Q: Does every student have an "Aspen Account"?
A: Yes! The only exception would be a new student that has not been entered into the South Colonie data base. Students that have the ability to log onto our computer network will use the same log-in and password to access our school's network. The user name is the student ID number and the password has been self-selected by students. PARENTS: Your child has about a 99% probability of being able to access the Aspen Account. STUDENTS: Please be honest with your parents/guardians about your ability to access your Aspen account. STUDENTS: For your own security and privacy...do NOT share your account log-in information with anyone OTHER than your parents/guardians.
Q: What information can I get from my Aspen account?
A: Your current grades, owed assignments, your schedule, your absent reports, and MUCH more!
Q: What does it mean if there is no grade listed for an assignment?
A: There are several reasons that there would be no grade listed. Here are the most likely reasons: The assignment has not been scored yet. The student was absent the day the assignment was due. The assignment due date is in the future. If a zero appears as a grade, that suggests that the student was present on the day the assignment was due and failed to turn it in.
Ms. Detrick's grade book codes:
Ab- Indicates the student was absent the day that the assignment was due. It will need to be made up, otherwise, the grade will turn into a zero.
WA-Indicates that the student was absent the day the assignment was given or will need more time to complete the assignment due to an absence. It will need to be made up, otherwise, the grade will turn into a zero.
IP- Indicates that the assignment is "in progress." The student has been granted extended time to complete the assignment that has already been started. This code may also be used for presentations that have been prepared, but not presented yet.
EX-Indicates that the student is exempt from an assignment and therefore does not need to complete it.
SIP- "Scoring in Progress"-Indicates the teacher is has collected the assignment and needs extended time to correct the assignment (example: Essays, extended response tests that take three or more hours for the teacher to score.)
If a student or a parent has a "hard/paper copy" of the "Average Breakdown" for a particular subject, the "--" suggests that the assignment has a due date that is after the date the report was printed OR the assignment has been turned in, but has not been scored by the teacher yet.
Q: What should a student do to eliminate a zero from Ms. Detrick's grade book?
A: Complete a "Missing Homework Sheet" to help parents/teachers diagnose the cause of the late homework. Staple the signed "Missing Homework Sheet" to the completed late assignment. Place it in the late basket the next school day during homeroom. (Be advised: Ms. Detrick's priority is not processing late papers. Your late paper may not get Ms. Detrick's attention for several days. To avoid potential drama with your parent(s)/guardians, simply turn assignments in by the due date! If you owe an on-line task, the web site may be attached when you click on the "details" of the assignment. DO the on-line activity, then notify Ms. Detrick that you have completed it. (Otherwise, she will never look at her Quia account to update your score.) If you believe that you have already completed the on-line activity, log into your Quia account to see if it is listed. Quia assignments do not automatically transfer into your Apsen account upon completion, therefore students are responsible for notifying Ms. Detrick if they complete a Quia assignment after it's due date. Please note: In preparation for 7th grade, NO Late work is accepted during the 4th quarter.
To Log into your Quia account:
Your user name is: firstlast349 (For example: johndoe349)
For hyphenated names, do not include the hyphen.
Your password is your student ID # (Can be found on your report card, or any school issued document.) To access the on-line "Quia" tests, click on the URL address of the test, then you will need to log in.
If your student number begins with a zero, enter it without the first zero.
Example: 0978478 is entered as 978478.
Q: Where can I get additional copies of assignments that have not been turned in?
A: Visit the "Announcements & Homework" Page. Find the week that the assignment was assigned and/or due. It is likely that it is an attachment on the "weekly agenda" announcements. In some cases, the attachment or link can be found in your Aspen account under "Assignment-Details." Students that are organizationally challenged are encouraged to "self-rate" using the forms attached to the bottom of this page. Parents are encouraged to review these forms with their child. In many cases, completion of these forms can be beneficial (for diagnostic purposes) at a parent conference.

Q: Are all teachers using Aspen?
A: Yes! If there is no data for a particular class, check back a week later.
Q: How are grades calculated for Ms. Detrick? (What is the grading scheme?)
A: Ms. Detrick has five different grading categories:
1. Practice Sheet Completion: As long as a student completes a "practice sheet" to the BEST of his/her ability, it will be entered as a 100% in the grade book regardless if the actual answers justify a 100%. The purpose is to practice a new concept and learn from any mistakes. Ms. Detrick often modifies future instruction based on the results of "Practice Sheets." If a student only completes half of a practice sheet, he/she may earn a 50% on the assignment. This is 10% of the overall quarterly grade. (Code: PS)
2. Homework: Most often, homework sheets cover a topic that is not considered "new content." It is given a number grade based on the percent correct. This is 10% of the overall quarterly grade. (Code HW)
3. Quiz: This is 30% of the overall quarterly grade. (Code Q)
4. Test: This is 50% of the overall quarterly grade. (Code T) Any zeroes issued in this category have a GREAT impact on the overall average.
5. Ungraded: (Code "UG") This does NOT count towards the quarterly average. A "100" indicates completion of the task. A "0" means the task has not been completed. Example: Turn in a paper to be signed by a parent. A zero in that category has no impact on the overall average. It is really there just for parents/guardians to verify that a non academic task has been assigned and the student followed through on the task.
Q: What is the best way to prepare for Science Tests?
A: Look for the study link on either the Science page or the "Announcements" page. Practice at home using your computer the days leading up to the test day. The correct answers will be displayed to you when you complete your practice session. Practice the test as many times as necessary for you to build your confidence. Students are strongly advised to STUDY using this resource. Typically, the test will be taken on-line in our computer lab. The questions and answers will appear in a random order each time you practice/take the test. Parents: You can immediately know the results of your child's Science test by logging in to their Quia Account (even before Ms. Detrick transfers the data to her Aspen account):
To Log into your Quia account: http://www.quia.com/web
Your user name is: firstlast349 (For example: johndoe349)
Your password is your student ID # (Can be found on your report card, or any school issued document.)
If your student number begins with a zero, enter it without the first zero.
Example: 0978478 is entered as 978478.
Q: What should parents do if they notice written (and long term) assignments are not being turned in.
A: Students are given class time (often in our computer lab) to work on long term projects and assignments. If class time is not used wisely, students can quickly fall behind. Students that need additional time to complete tasks that are done in our school's computer lab should FULLY utilize their SC Google account. In this account, working drafts that have been started in class could been finished at home, then "shared" with the teacher. Organizationally challenged students can also benefit from using this account because it eliminates the possibility of losing drafts. View the video below for more information.

Ms. Detrick will not be able to help you retrieve it if you forget your password. Forgotten passwords need to be reset by Mr. Pitts in our computer lab. )
Q: What opportunities do students have to boost up their math average?
A: For each chapter, students may do the "Castle-On Line" task that corresponds with that chapter. The on-line grade may be swapped out for any lower quiz or homework grade from the same chapter. To activate the "swap-out", students staple the loose leaf paper used to do the computations from the Castle on-line task to the quiz or homework selected to swap out. On the loose leaf paper, write the date the Castle activity was completed along with the score. The next school day, students should place it in the basket next to Ms. Detrick's desk. This will prompt Ms. Detrick to verify your score on Castle, then switch your lower grade to the score achieved on Castle. It is recommended that students check their Aspen accounts to verify that the switch has occurred. (A note will appear next to the score that was switched.) If you LOST the paper that has the lower score, use your Aspen account to find the assignment label of the assignment you want to swap out. Include that label and your score on the loose leaf paper. Write the following: "I'd like to swap my Castle Chapter ___ for the lower I achieved of ___% on __________ (Label) from _________(date)."
To find the activity, go to "incomplete assignment." Select the current chapter and begin. Work will be automatically saved in the event that you need to return to the activity later.
All Castle swap outs need to be completed well before the end of the quarter.
Q: How do I calculate what score I need for the fourth quarter or on a final exam to pass a class?
A: If you are unable to use algebra to calculate this, use the "FSM Core Subject Template" attached below. Type in the grades that you earned for each quarter. Place a "hypothetical" final exam score. Then look to see what the hypothetical "Final School Mark" is.
Q: Which is considered the most current information between viewing grades on Aspen vs. viewing them on a printed report?
A: Viewing grades "live" on the Aspen account will ALWAYS be more accurate than a printed version of the same material because by the time the paper version is printed, brought home, and signed by a parent, new data will have already been added.
So this means if you see that an assignment was reported as "missing" on the paper version, then you check later on Aspen to see that there is a grade, you can conclude that the grade must have been entered on Aspen after the document was sent to the printer.
Also, the Aspen reports for future assignments on the "Progress Reports" will be listed as missing, when in fact it has not been assigned yet. Unfortunately, teachers have no control over how it is worded on the report, which can be confusing. If you look at the date that the report was printed, that can help you determine if the"missing" assignment is really just a "future" assignment.
